[edit]Thank you for your guidance and comments. While the article is about my father, the book/biography (see article's references) was done by a 3rd-party author (Samantha Hilbert Thomas). I agreed to perform the creation of the article for the author and publisher. They edited, revised and approved the text of the article before I created it. The article is mainly the work of the author and publisher and is published with their granting permission of use. I hope this clears up any concerns about my being too closely tied to the article.W scottii (talk) 00:55, 25 February 2011 (UTC)
- I have read about your father in many sources, including old copies of Soaring magazine, so I am confident the article topic is encyclopedic (in other words that it meets WP:N). While a good start, the article does have a number of issues that need fixing. First off I have to ask if the text is identical to the ref cited, because if it is straight from the book, then unless the book has been released under a permissive licence (Like Creative Commons) we have a copyright problem. The second problem is that we need footnotes to show where the information came from and prove it isn't a copyright problem - I see you have added some footnotes as a start, although there is much uncited text yet. I don't have the book so I can't address those two issues directly, although the third issue will also take care of the first. The third issue is that it doesn't read anything like an encyclopedia article, it reads like a fan page. It needs a complete re-write to make the wording and style encyclopedic and also to clean up the formatting as well. I can do that, probably tomorrow. - Ahunt (talk) 01:31, 25 February 2011 (UTC)
- Hello. In about 1965-67 a glider landed in my grandpa's wheat field near Udall, Kansas. I have been trying to determine who the pilot was for years. The event of helping the glider pilot move the glider, tie it down and driving him to town for some refreshments (pimento cheese and bear as I recall) is a memory that sticks vividly in my mind. He told us that he had taken off from Texas earlier that day and was trying to see how far he could go. This event is part of the reason I have such an interest in aviation currently. So if there is anyway we could search through Wally's log book for a flight where he landed out near Udall, Kansas it would be GREAT to know if it was him. Again, thank you so much for your guidance on my first Wikipedia article which was patterened after the article on Dick Johnson. Please note: Regarding the rewrite...both the publisher and author have agreed to the Creative Commons license. However, they both include the stipulation that they must approve any significant changes made to the article. As a suggetion, it might be best to submit your proposed rewrite to me via email. I can then forward your revision to the publisher and author for their comments and, hopefully, approval. I cited only text taken from the book, but, as noted above and below, there is no copyright issue. I have included the statements from both the publisher and author in this talk section. How do you wish to handle getting the rewrite to the parties for their approval? BTW...the rest of the uncited text is also in the book because the book is the source of the article. I felt that citing every line would be distracting to the reader.

- Sorry but Wikipedia doesn't work that way, please see Wikipedia:Five pillars, The Terms of Use and especially Wikipedia:Ownership of articles. As long as the material here is not a copyright violation then by putting it into this article you have released it under a Creative Commons licence and no longer control what the page says. You will have seen the notice when you created the article which says: "You irrevocably agree to release your contributions under the CC-BY-SA 3.0 License and the GFDL". Under the licence for this article and under US copyright law there is also very specifically no requirement for other editors to get anyone's permission to edit the article, it is freely open for editing. Basically if you or the original author of the book wanted to control what this page says then you shouldn't have put in on Wikipedia, especially since the article needs a total rewrite to meet Wikipedia's quality standards. While the basic biographical information is all there, it reads like a fan-piece right now and needs a lot of work which I should be able to get started on today. - Ahunt (talk) 12:52, 25 February 2011 (UTC)
- Okay, three editors have now gone over the article and it is more encyclopedic in tone and content now. I have also moved the article from Wallace A. Scott to Wally Scott to comply with the Wikipedia policy on naming article at WP:COMMONNAME. I have also gone back and fixed all the links to this article from other articles. - Ahunt (talk) 22:40, 25 February 2011 (UTC)
Thanks everyone. I understand. It looks REALLY great with the work everyone put into it. Your work/effort is greatly appreciated, for sure! Again, THANK YOU. I have asked the publisher and author to take a look at the edited version, just so they are aware. It looks great to me! I do have one further question...for the multiple "citation needed" places, may I go in and add the citations from the book that would include page numbers from the book? Best Regards, W scottii (talk) 00:33, 26 February 2011 (UTC)
- Glad that you think that is all an improvement. Yes, please do add the citations. On Wikipedia it is most normal to have at least one cite per paragraph, and since you seem to be the only one with the book that would fall to you to do. If those are added then it is pretty unlikely that any other editor in the future would come along and ask for more citations. If you can fill those in where the "citation needed" tags are then we can probably get rid of the header "ref improve" tag as well. - Ahunt (talk) 00:43, 26 February 2011 (UTC)
Citations are cleaned, now. A copy of the book may be ordered by going to btlinkpublishing.com and clicking on their Book Store button. I have one additional request. For the article's lead photo "Wally Scott in 1968"...can someone assist me with changing the WikiMediaCommons file name to Wally Scott in 1965 and changing the category to "Aviation"? I made errors when loading the file to WikiMediaCommons. Thanks again.W scottii (talk) 12:28, 26 February 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for adding those, I have removed the tag at the top. The article looks pretty good now, well written and referenced. To move an image on Commons you need to ask a Commons admin. I can have a look at the category over there, though. - Ahunt (talk) 14:54, 26 February 2011 (UTC)
Thank you. I'm not looking to move the photo...just rename the file to correct its date. Also, Samantha and Karin both offered positive comments regarding the editors' work. I will contact the Commons admin about renaming the file.W scottii (talk) 22:30, 26 February 2011 (UTC)
- Glad that the new version looks good! In the world of Wikipedia and Commons "re-naming" is the same as "moving" it. If you do get it renamed do make sure that you put the new file name in this article as it may show as a broken link instead of an image! - Ahunt (talk) 22:37, 26 February 2011 (UTC)
Roger that...will watch for broken links and fix ASAP. I figured out how to "request" the move on Commons...editor request flag has been entered on Commons.W scottii (talk) 23:10, 26 February 2011 (UTC)
- Just a comment on images you have said that you took the image File:Wally and Boots Scott.jpg in 1952 which mean that you would have been somewhere between one and five when you took the image! I think you need to provide more details or it may get questioned at commons. You also say that you took File:Wally Scott in 1965.jpg in 1965 when you were no older than 13. The quality of File:Wally Scott in ASW 12.jpg looks like it was scanned from a magazine. For image File:Wallace Sr. in 1998.jpg you have said it came from the Scott Family Photo Archives so it really needs evidence that it has been released by them. Just need to make sure that your comments and claims can be proved if questioned at Commons as it would be a shame to have them deleted. MilborneOne (talk) 23:26, 26 February 2011 (UTC)
Good comment. I will add more details and clean-up to the image descriptions and image discussion pages to clarify. As a first-time Wiki author, the option choices sometime overwhelm. I am better educated, now, with everyone's help.W scottii (talk) 23:53, 26 February 2011 (UTC)
