Future

[edit]

I think having a page for the Vilayet of Sivas is good, but it could be a page not entirely focused on it being on of "the Six" (though we mention that too, of course). For the time being it's in poor shape, but at least we have one. Ordtoy (talk) 05:31, 20 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sivas or Sebastia?

[edit]

At the page Six Armenian vilayets, this vilayet is called Vilayet of Sebastia. This redirectd to here. Sebastia is not mentioned anywhere here, and Siva is not mentioned at Six Armenian vilayets. I would conclude that these two names are synonyms, therefore, both names should be mentioned here as well as in other pages where this vilayet is predominant, such as in Template:Six Armenian Vilayets. The current situation is inconsistent and therefore inacceptable. There has to be a discussion on which is the predominant name of the Vilayet according to Wikipedia:Naming procedures, this name has to be given to the present page, and the alternative name has to be mentioned in the head phrase, and both names have to be mentioned in the major pages linking to here.  Andreas  (T) 21:50, 1 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I reverted the removal of the Sebastia name and the revomal of the infobox.  Andreas  (T) 21:56, 1 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
My edits were reverted again, eliminating the name "Sebastia" from altogether from the relevant articles without any explanation. This is against Wikipedia:Naming conventions (geographic names) and Wikipedia:Neutral point of view. A google shearch reveals that there are 45 million pages on the Internet that contain the words "Sebastia" and "Sivas" together, indicating that both names are widely used. Readers like me who know very little on Armenian history would like to know why two names exist for the vilayet, where they came from, and why some individuals prefer one name over the other (to the point that they wish to eliminate one of them altogether). Andreas  (T) 13:52, 2 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
As the page stands now[1], the Armenian name of the Sivas Vilayet is simply "վիլայեթ", transliterated "vilayet". This is nonsense.  Andreas  (T) 14:27, 2 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I put all my discussions of this topic in the Mamûretü'l-Azîz page. I didn't think it needed rehashing on this one as well. I opened requests for help and mediation on that page -- and always mentioned that it was going to also be applicable to the Sivas page. I made my edits to this page after my request for mediation was accepted (refer to my contributions page if you want to see how I went through the proper channels in making these changes). Obviously my removal of part of the Armenian-language name was a mistake (I intended to remove vilayet part as I did for Mamûretü'l-Azîz) and should be corrected. My objection is not to an Armenian name for Sivas. Instead, I believe that we shouldn't have a uniquely Armenian emphasis on an Ottoman administrative construct. On the page for Sivas the Armenian name is absolutely necessary. But when talking about the name of a province in the Ottoman Empire, it seems less so, especially the vilayet part. The name Sivas derives from Sebastia but it was the Ottomans who named the province after the city. Is it important to know how to transliterate the Ottoman name of this province into the Armenian alphabet? It doesn't seem so to me. And notice even the strange situation in which we have for Ottoman Turkish: Sivas and for Armenian: Sebastiayi vilayet. Ordtoy (talk) 16:14, 2 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Name in Armenian

[edit]

The Armenian name cannot be "Սեբաստիայի վիլայեթ" or "Sebastiayi vilayet" because neither gives any hits in Google. Anyone knowledgable in Armenian history can find a source that shows how Armenians would refer to the Vilayet as a political structure, both during and after the Ottoman time?  Andreas  (T) 21:43, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Move discussion in progress

[edit]

There is a move discussion in progress on Talk:Adrianople Vilayet which affects this page. Please participate on that page and not in this talk page section. Thank you. —RMCD bot 12:21, 2 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
