The Thach participated in Persian Gulf operations escorting tankers and keeping sealanes free, performing turnover with the USS Grey in the winter of 1990. Departure from San diego was just before Christmas 1989. While on patrol the Thach responded to the distress call from the Surf City which was found to be on fire. The commercial ship was saved and made port. During this deployment the Thach sported 4 helos. 2 of the normal complement and an additional 2 army helos. Ports of call for the transit home included Freemantle/Perth, Hobart, and Sydney. During the transit to home port (San Diego) the military operations occurred whereby the military forces under the direction of Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait.
