Official Name

[edit]

The official name on the UEFA website is UEFA Best Player in Europe Award. Can someone change it? La Fuzion (talk) 17:34, 25 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Most (if not all) of the third party sources drop the word "Award" when referring to it, probably mostly due to the fact that it's a new thing and people are still unfamiliar. I'll move it to "UEFA Best Player in Europe Award" for now as we should give credence the actual organizers of the award, but I'll be open to further discussion. —Yk Yk Yk  talk ~ contrib 06:45, 26 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Understandable and I appreciate your prompt response. I'm also open to further discussion if necessary. La Fuzion (talk) 14:15, 26 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

UEFA Men's Player of the Year Award

[edit]

According to this link (Buffon, Messi and Ronaldo on Player of the Year shortlist), Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, and Gianluigi Buffon have been listed as the three finalists for what is now being called the "UEFA Men's Player of the Year Award", rather than the "UEFA Best Player in Europe Award". It seems to be the same award (just with the name of the Men's award reflecting the "UEFA Best Women's Player in Europe Award"), with the same format with a top 10 being announced followed by the three finalists and the winner being announced ahead of the 2017 UEFA Super Cup, so I was wondering if the title of the page should be changed, or should a new page be made? Thoughts? Thanks! Best, Messirulez (talk) 15:32, 15 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Messirulez: It may be best to bring it up at WT:FOOTY. There is more exposure there. Vaselineeeeeeee★★★ 13:53, 18 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@PeeJay2K3:, @GiantSnowman:, @Number 57: Any thoughts? The previous name has a separate page as well. UEFA Men's Player of the Year Award new name. Vaselineeeeeeee★★★ 18:07, 24 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It looks as if the name has simply changed? GiantSnowman 18:09, 24 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. And although UEFA claimed that the UEFA Best Player in Europe Award was brand new when it was established in 2011, I personally think the whole thing should be combined into a big UEFA Champions League awards article. They've brought back the positional awards, after all, so why not merge it all with UEFA Club Football Awards? – PeeJay 18:14, 24 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I'd agree with that. The templates should be merged as well. Vaselineeeeeeee★★★ 18:15, 24 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
And to save space, perhaps reduce the tables for the main award to just the winners, then have individual articles for each season with the number of points for each nominee (akin to the Ballon d'Or season articles)? – PeeJay 18:17, 24 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good. Vaselineeeeeeee★★★ 18:26, 24 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Merge Best European Goalkeeper while we're at it, no need for it's own if the others are all together. Vaselineeeeeeee★★★ 18:17, 24 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Are you sure that's the same award? The Best European Goalkeeper award seems to have a slightly divergent history from the UEFA award (see 2010, when Julio Cesar won the UEFA award and Iker Casillas won the Best European Goalkeeper award). – PeeJay 18:19, 24 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, true, the "main" template above the goalkeeper table on the club awards page threw me off, it's misleading, it's not really tecnically the main page since its divergent. I'll fix it. Do we know if Buffon winning the goalkeeper positional award is back to the same as being the Best European goalkeeper too? Vaselineeeeeeee★★★ 18:26, 24 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, the Best European Goalkeeper Award is its own award, and is unrelated to the UEFA Club Goalkeeper of the Year Award or the UEFA Champions League Goalkeeper of the season Award, although it is likely that Buffon will also win it this year; it used to be awarded to the goalkeeper who placed highest in the Ballon d'Or, but now it is a title awarded by ESM and UEFA Magazine, I believe, but is unrelated to the ESM team of the year and the UEFA Team of the Year, etc. I'm not sure what is best to do with this article as the UEFA Men's Player of the Year seems to essentially by the Best Player in Europe Award, but under a different name, while the positional awards which seem to be related to it resemble the former UEFA club footballer of the year awards (except now they will also exist for the Europa League as well as the Champions League). Maybe it would be a good idea to make a UEFA Champions League awards article for the award from this year onwards (and maybe include the UEFA Champions League squad of the season from this year onwards, the positional awards, and the player of the year awards); I know that in 2011 the UEFA Best Player in Europe Award originally stemmed from the discontinued UEFA Club Footballer Award (last awarded in 2010), but Iniesta also won it in 2012 for his performance at the European Championship, not in the Champions League, so it doesn't only take into consideration club competitions, and it was initially designed as UEFA's response to the FIFA Ballon d'Or, which had been created following hte merging of the France Football Ballon d'Or and FIFA World Player of the Year Awards in 2010, so I think the two awards should be separate, but that's only my personal opinon. It's kind of how the The Best FIFA Men's Player Award has it's own page, and doesn't carry on under the FIFA World Player of the Year Award, even though they are essentially the same award. Best, Messirulez (talk) 18:33, 24 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@TheBigJagielka: Seeing as you changed the name, any thoughts on this? Vaselineeeeeeee★★★ 22:35, 24 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Re: The individual player award, the name has changed (see 2015/2016 (August 2016) and 2016/17 (August 2017)). The articles should be moved to reflect the change. TheBigJagielka (talk) 22:47, 24 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I agree with that, but do you have any thoughts on the other proposals within the discussion regarding merges or making "UEFA Champions League awards"? Vaselineeeeeeee★★★ 23:06, 24 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

List article?

[edit]

Should this be considered a List article? Govvy (talk) 13:15, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

National team

[edit]

Shouldn't the tables of the finalists include their national team as the award is judged for both club and international performance? The club and national team are listed together by UEFA itself (see for e.g. "Luka Modrić (Real Madrid & Croatia)...")?--Miki Filigranski (talk) 18:23, 30 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Don't get me wrong, the national flags don't make it obvious enough.--Miki Filigranski (talk) 19:21, 30 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Mistakes in the 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 rankings

Hello

I corrected the rankings but forgot to cite a reference. Here they are:

Points

[edit]

Does anyone have any insight into this award. The points make little sense. In total 1210 points were awarded in 22/23, from potentially 32 (CL Coaches) + 48 (EL) + 32 (Conf) + 55 (National Coaches) + 55 (Journalists) juries, each awarding 5 + 3 + 1 points. So the total points should be 1998 (but is 1210) or at least some multiple of 9 (5 + 3 + 1) which 1210 is not. DavidDublin (talk) 14:54, 24 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
