This article was part of an assignment from Saint Louis University in Spring 2014 (see the course page for more details).

  • I think the "Function in mammals" section is good, but I think it might be too jargon heavy. I would try to explain the same concepts just in plain language. The average reader may not be familiar with all of the terms you are referring to.
  • Add links to other Wikipedia articles within your content.
  • Add more content to "Effect of Tsix mutations." It may be interesting to read about mutations that result in abnormal X and Y chromosome pairings (XXY, etc.)
  • It might be helpful to add a subsection within the "Function in mammals" section that goes into more detail about imprinting and how it relates to the Tsix gene. Or, you could just add a link to another Wikipedia article on imprinting. Either way, readers should have some reference as to what imprinting is.
  • "Regulation" section is also very science language heavy.
  • This is just a suggestion, but you could add a section about the history of the Tsix gene. Who discovered it? When?
    • We know the first group to identify the gene, but I don't know if this is necessary for this Wikipedia page. For one, the Xist gene page does not have a similar section.   • Euchromatic is a term not all readers (myself included) aren't familiar with. I recommend either defining this or linking it to an article about the term (perhaps euchromatin).
  • The last 3 sentences of your lead need citations
  • This is a stylistic suggestion, but the wording of the second and third sentences is a bit confusing. You may want to have a link to the female karyotype, X-inactivation, or even a brief explanation of dosage control to help make sense of this a little more.
  • "Xist is expressed from the X chromosome in females and serves to inactivate the other X chromosome." This makes it sound as though there is only one X chromosome in females, which is confusing because you then mention a second X chromosome.
  • "Tsix prevents the accumulation of Xist on one female X chromosome to maintain the active euchromatic state of the chosen chromosome." Again, you may want to explain that, for dosage reasons, one X chromosome must remain active and the other repressed, which is why Tsix is necessary to prevent Xist from accumulating on one of the two X chromosomes.
  • Add a link to [imprinting (genetics)]]

  • The first paragraph under "Functions in Mammals" needs a citation.
  • Under "Regulation in cell differentiation" you might consider linking to Rex1 for the reader's reference.
  • Source 7 also briefly mentions the X inactivation in bovine-it might be useful to include this information (and try to find information about the Tsix mutations in other animals if possible) under the "Effects of Tsix mutations" because this section only has information about mice so far.

  • This is a little picky, but under the "function in mammals section," in sentence 3, the words "over accumulation" have no dash between them, while in sentence 4 they do have a dash between them. For the sake of consistency, you might change that so they appear the same in both sentences.
  • Under "mutations," you might link out to null allele.
  • For clarification of the first sentence under "Tsix in humans," when you say "imprinting does not occur" do you mean imprinting of Tsix?
  • Under "Tsix in Humans" you might link out to vestige

Gene summary box and flowchart

I added the gene summary box using a similar format to the one for the Xist gene. If this is incorrect, please feel free to change it. I also added a simplified flowchart of Tsix's role in Xist regulation, but I can't seem to make the image go to the side of the page. Hello and thanks for your contributions. A few comments:

  • Maybe we can make the WP:First sentence more accessible. I didn't know what an RNA gene was, so can we post that the portion is non-coding?
  • In the WP:LEAD, what does "function as the antisense" mean? Are we trying to say that it always binds the other single strand of RNA to inactivate it? Maybe we can say so.
  • I wonder if the sentence -- "Xist is expressed from one of the X chromosomes in females and serves to inactivate the other X chromosome" -- and some of the background information in the article is always needed. Maybe the sentence can be reworded to make Tsix the first word? I wonder if we are straying off topic a bit. When I write a Wikipedia article, I tend to focus on the topic exclusively, unless I write a specific background section. Maybe one would be valuable in this article. That way readers can get right to Tsix information (or the background), if they desire.

  • Are there any pictures you can use of Tsix or PRDM14 that are available through Wikimedia Commons?
    • No, there are none available. We created the one on this page to simplify the mechanism of action as a picture of the actual gene would not be very insightful to the average reader. Iamwillthinnes (talk) 23:10, 10 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Under Tsix in Humans you use the phrase "evolutionary vestige". Could you define or explain this a little bit more?
  • I suggest wikilinking some more phrases like: evolutionary vestige, Rex-1, pluripotency network, PRDM14, etc.
  • Is Tsix present in other organisms or mammals? You go into detail about humans and a little about mice, but if it has evolutionary roots, is it still present?
    • The OMIM page does not discuss any other organisms. I believe that it has not been studied in any because the research is aimed more at understanding Tsix' mechanism of action and less on understanding how it works in different organisms.   • work on expanding the mutation section and Tsix in humans to more than just one paragraph
  • in the lead table, you can remove the sections for which information is not available which happens a couple of times
    • Jfriend2, thanks for the comments. Unfortunately at this time, there is not enough information on either section to warrant the expanse into two paragraphs. On the lead table, I'm not sure if I should edit that or not because another user (not in our class) edited that section and the fact that there is not information might be informative in itself to a reader. For future reference, the Table is set up in such a manner that if the missing information becomes available at a later time, it will automatically be inserted, so it is best to leave those sections. Biolprof (talk) 03:16, 15 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
