St. James Church, Levoča, - really?

[edit]

St. James Church, Levoča is the name of this article as I write this. I created it as St. James, Levoča, which I think is simpler and more internationally understood. "Church" doesn't translate the original name, Bazilika svätého Jakuba (Levoča). It is also wrong grammar. A church dedicated to the Saint would be St James's Church, Levoča in British English, and St. James' Church, Levoča in American English. We could return to the first simple name, or say Basilica of St. James, Levoča, or what? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:53, 29 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

This is a tricky one. It seems that all varieties of punctuation are used for this purpose on Wikipedia. For examples:

and sometimes without the '.' after St, e.g.:

And there are doubtless other versions as well.

There seems to be no WP standard for this - should we perhaps take the whole thing to Wikipedia:Village pump? It is complicated by the fact that I believe the Church of England uses the format >St. James'< - which I believe to be against the rules of English grammar (>St. James's< is correct). In the meantime I've made a notice board enquiry here.

For this article, the safest and least controversial option is IMO to go for Basilica of St. James, Levoča. Cf: Cathedral Basilica of St. James (Brooklyn) and Cathedral Basilica of St. James the Apostle, Tunja.Smerus (talk) 12:30, 29 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I'll move it to Basilica, - even if it won't stay, it's a good redirect. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:33, 29 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
