Factual errors

[edit]

The old gym at UTM ("The Pit") was built in the early 60's, yes, when the school was still known as UT Martin Branch, not being recognized as a primary campus until 1967. This arena was the primary venue for the school's indoor sports until the late 1970s. When the mascot name was changed from "Baby Vols" to "Pacers" (concurrent with the change of the status of the campus), it became known as Pacer Arena. This is where Pat Head (later Summitt) played her college basketball, as a "Lady Pacer", the inspiration for the name "Lady Vols" when she became women's coach at UTK (the team had previously been referred to as the "Volettes", where as the term "Pacerettes" had referred to a women's drill team at UTM maintained by the ROTC Department).

The Physical Education and Convocation Center was built in the late 1970's right behind it, but it is NOT a renovation of the older arena but a completely new facility with an indoor pool (previously this had remained in the older gym built in 1930 during the school's junior college phase) and a new arena and arena floor. This newer building was what was renamed to be the Tom and Kathleen Elam Center. Some dedicated Wikipedian needs to find the references for this and then incorporate them into the article, which as it is written is misleading at best and just outright WRONG at worst. 2600:1004:B156:62FF:E4E1:F815:2596:A2E7 (talk) 01:18, 14 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
