suspicion

[edit]
The suspect, identified as 37-year-old Steve Stephens, posted a cellphone video …

Because he'll never come to trial, will he forever remain a suspect, i.e., one of whom it is suspected but not confirmed that he did the thing? —Tamfang (talk) 23:35, 30 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Unless and until someone finds and cites a source that states that ballistic or other evidence has confirmed that Stephens was Godwin's killer, that is correct. Since Stephens is dead, we do not need to hedge by saying "allegedly", etc., but his status at the time he died was "suspected killer" and we cannot change it to something else without citing a reliable source. Proposing rename/move to Murder of Robert Godwin

[edit]

When searching "Shooting of..." into Wikipedia, most of the results are notable shooting cases in which the victim is killed by a police officer, with examples being the shooting of Daniel Shaver, the shooting of Philando Castile, and other police-related homicides, with one notable exception being the shooting of Trayvon Martin, which is similar to this one where the perpetrator was a non-police officer. To me the other pages titled "Shooting of..." relate more to cases where the perpetrator was not charged with murder, or was charged but acquitted. Although Steve Stephens was not charged with murder, as he committed suicide before he could be apprehended, and he intentionally committed the crime rather than in the heat of passion or in self defense, it seems to me that "Murder of Robert Godwin" would be a better fit for the title of this page. Just my suggestion. Nick Gurr 7777 | TALK / CONTRIBS | 16:33, 23 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Title

[edit]

Shouldn't the title be the Killing of ..., and not simply the Shooting of ...? The latter implies that the victim was shot, but did not die. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 05:47, 31 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. WP:DEATHS says "Killing of", though in my opinion that's not quite correct, and it should be called "Murder of" here given the sourcing, absence of any BLP concerns, and the fact that this Godwin's killing was ruled a homicide. 69.174.144.79 (talk) 09:45, 3 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
