Designed by women

[edit]

Regarding the following passage:

One little known fact is that America was one of the few ocean liners, American or otherwise, that had been designed by women. There were few women working in maritime design, and America's women designers created a warm and rich American atmosphere. The stodginess and overwrought decor from liners past was jettisoned to create a friendly ship. Interior design and furniture were installed to provide an atmosphere of Yankee lightness, cheerfulness and sophisticated charm.

Could someone please provide a source for this claim? Nothing against women or the contributor, but this is the first I've ever heard of this. SchuminWeb (Talk) 03:28, 24 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

And it sounds a little feminist to me. Perhaps it should be removed until a source can be found? Alphabet55 (talk) 17:01, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • I agree. Perhaps a rewrite is in order to remove biased wording? I'll see what I can do with it. 216.183.234.7 (talk) 14:05, 5 July 2008 (UTC) Oops, forgot to sign in. I'm going to move that section to the design and construction area of the article, where I believe that it is much more relevant than its current place. Clegs (talk) 14:07, 5 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

WWII

[edit]

I am reinserting the WWII section. All that text comes from the public domain Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships database. Here is the link: http://www.history.navy.mil/danfs/w6/west_point-ii.htm Zurel Darrillian 13:30, 11 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

the Nazi spies?

[edit]

is this really relevant to the story of the ship? that she carried two Nazi spies? i am sure she carried a few members of Israeli intel too. Statesboropow (talk) 05:30, 30 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

In 1941, she carried two Nazi spies from the Duquesne Spy Ring in her crew: Erwin Wilhelm Siegler and Franz Joseph Stigler. Both men were charged by the FBI with espionage and sentenced to 10 years and 16 years' imprisonment, respectively.

this part isnt relevant at all. i took it out. it looks just like another lame attempt to tell the world about Nazi Germany. How many members of the IRA rode on the ship? Statesboropow (talk) 03:47, 30 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

But they weren't CARRIED, atleast one of them was a part of the crew of the ship, which makes it relevant. --DraconianDebate (talk) 14:15, 5 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Disruptive and irrelevant to the story of the ship. Take it out. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.203.96.253 (talk) 17:04, 14 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

maiden voyage

[edit]

The Wikipedia page says the SS America started her maiden voyage on August 22, 1940. However, I have an envelope stating it is from the maiden voyage and the stamps are cancelled on August 14, 1940 in Puerto Rico. 76.176.135.89 (talk) 22:55, 23 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

"fixed". According to Darren Byrne's extensive information (see ref.) she returned on August 22. Byrne writes the maiden voyage was bound for San Juan (Puerto Rico) which suits your report very well, too. Ardik (talk) 23:08, 26 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This book give intersting facts on the Liner as it compared to both other liners and ships of the era. This is the reason that I selected this article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chrispy824 (talkcontribs) 17:59, 24 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Born on the SS America

[edit]

Is there anyone out there that has any info about me. My name is David and i was born in 1960 on the SS America. My Email Is (redacted) My cell number is (redacted). I hope to hear form you if you know anything about me. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.233.23.113 (talk) 00:57, 17 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

conflict

[edit]

48 hours after grounding the ship broke in two. In 2007 the ship broke in half. These terms mean the same thing so would someone correct the confusion? Otr500 (talk) 10:46, 6 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

1939 or 1940?

[edit]

The article starts by "SS America was an ocean liner built in 1940", and the Spanish, Russian, French, German versions of this article read "1940" in the title. However, English version reads "1939". Should this be modified?

--Maku17 (talk) 15:46, 10 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Yes because 1940 was when she was completed. America4094 (talk) 21:54, 22 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Then why does it still say 1939, I am formally asking for a name change to SS America (1940).Slatersteven (talk) 10:41, 11 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Wrecked at Fuerteventura (1994–2013)

[edit]

There's no explanation as to why this is a year range rather than a simple year. The final date mentioned is 2007. If something happened in 2013 to change the ship's status, it needs an explanation. The date is likely derived from the note added to the [Sometimes Interesting article] that mentioned it was no longer visible on Google Maps as of 2013. I'm adding that, but it doesn't describe a definitive event for the ship, so I'm removing '2013' from the heading. 0x69494411 14:14, 7 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Venture Cruises photo

[edit]

Shouldn't it be mentioned that the Venture Cruises photo is not an actual 1978 photo, it is a retouched photo of the ship as Australis? I don't mind it's inclusion in the article, at least until an authentic one is added. (After all, photos of her from this time are hard to find.) I believe the original uploader is also who created it, please see https://matthewcox.deviantart.com/art/S-S-America-in-1978-661779032. Elsquared (talk) 01:58, 30 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Something is wrong here

[edit]

It was decommissioned in the 1940s, but it was still in service for more decades. Can someone correct this.49.178.144.162 (talk) 10:08, 26 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

She was decommissioned in 1946, that is her career in the US navy ceased. She continued in service from then on in private hands. Moons of Io (talk) 20:16, 26 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
