RFC - Is it appropriate to use the word "prestigious" ?

[edit]

Is the word "prestigious" in the section Miami_cannibal_attack#Victim used to describe Stuyvesant High School appropriate or is it a violation of WP:PEACOCK?

discussion

[edit]
  • The word is clearly a PEACOCK word that give no actual information to the reader about the subject of the article. There is zero indication that Eugene attacked the victim because he went to a particular "prestigious" high school. This is the article about the attack. The unfortunate victim is notable only for his unfortunate happenstance of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. We are not here to WP:NOTMEMORIALize the victim by emphasizing his fall from grace. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 12:44, 29 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Agree the adjective is unnecessary. Casliber (talk · contribs) 12:56, 29 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Why not? It's dog-bites-man: we don't expect homeless people to be alumni of prestigious schools. I hadn't heard of Stuyvesant before, but it's clear from scanning the lede of the article that the school is prestigious. If it would really make anyone feel any better, we could add a ref for the claim, though that seems unnecessary. --BDD (talk) 17:32, 4 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose removal--the whole point of mentioning Stuyvesant is that it is prestigious, and in this we are simply following the sources at the time that found this notable enough to point out. Otherwise even mentioning Poppo went to high school is silly, since 98% of people of his age did. As BDD mentions we cannot either assume that all our readers will have heard of Stuyvesant, unless, say, they are 9/11 buffs. As for not a memorial, that would make sense if there were some attempt to make Poppo look like a saint. (Indeed, the phrase "(considered to be "very superior")" regarding his IQ is unnecessary, since it is generally known what IQ scores indicate--hence I will remove it.) But "prestigious" ("Details of his life after he attended New York's prestigious Stuyvesant High School in the 1960s remain scarce" [1]) is straight from the sources. μηδείς (talk) 18:18, 4 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    • actually mentioning much about Poppo at all is pretty much non encyclopedic and has very little to do with the actual incident. he is merely a victim of wrong place wrong time and whether he went to school at the prestigious Stuyvesant, the exclusive White Hills, the notorious Cabrini Green, the mythical and superlative Dunwoody make squat little difference to whether or not he would have been attacked, how people would have reacted to his face being eaten. It is all WP:COATRACK to the actual reason this event is listed here. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 22:53, 4 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If it's bath salts his motives are know, if it's marijuana it's not.

[edit]

'While police sources speculated that the use of a street drug like "bath salts" might have been a factor,[3] experts have expressed doubt toward this speculation as toxicology reports were only able to identify marijuana in his system, leaving the ultimate cause of Eugene's behavior to remain unknown.[4]'

The above quoted text from the article shows bias. It suggests that if "bath salts" were detected in the toxicology report, then the ultimate cause of Eugene's behavior would be known - however the fact that marijuana was found in his system, this is not referenced as a contributing factor towards his behavior?

Bath salt: If found would have been "the ultimate cause of Eugene's behavior" Cannabis: ??? However even though Cannabis was found in his system and has the ability to trigger mental health issues including Schizophrenia; this is not of relevance? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.2.82.129 (talk) 22:42, 17 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Removal of 3rd party names

[edit]

I have removed the names of uninvolved parties per Wikipedia:AVOIDVICTIM, these people don't need the albatross of a WP article souring the rest of their lives. μηδείς (talk) 22:39, 9 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
