Old church

[edit]

Does anybody have any info about the old church next to the Auld Stand? How old is it? What is its name (no sign at the front, oddly enough) I surmise it was a Church of Ireland, but was it the ecclesiastical site that belonged to St Thomas Abbey of Dublin during the medieval period? When was it abandoned? It could do with a lot of community renovation at the moment. Where is the new Church of Ireland? Excellent article by the way. 86.42.96.251 (talk) 17:13, 27 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes it's called the Holy Trinity Church, Ratoath. It was built around 1836, there actually is a stone with the name on it inside the main gate on the left. Here is a link to the Ratoath parish websote if you want to find out more: http://www.ratoathparish.ie/history/church —Preceding unsigned comment added by Sobmeister (talkcontribs) 15:09, 28 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Very interesting indeed, Sobmeister. Thanks. It is the site of the Holy Trinity medieval church that was attached to St Thomas's Abbey. I note in your above link there was a Capuchin called Fr Barnaby Barnwell in the town in 1627. The Barnwells of Crickstown were the principal family in the town prior to Cromwell, but I've never heard the name there in my lifetime. Does anybody know what happened them, and are the remains of their estate in Crickstown still present? Thanks again for confirming the Holy Trinity connection. 86.42.96.251 (talk) 10:58, 30 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Good history about the town alright. But what about more recent developments, e.g. businesses in the town, a little about the sports sides of things, especially the wonderful GAA facility that is there. The places to go on a night out etc etc.
