Ratchanok Inthanon vs. Inthanon Ratchanok

[edit]

Every source that I have seen lists Ratchanok as her family name and Inthanon as her given name. Her English language wikipedia biography is the only place where this is reversed. I know that in many Asian cultures the given names goes last and the family name goes first, but my understanding is that Thailand does not follow that cultural practice. Can anyone confirm that Ratchanok is her first name and should be listed first, or should we change the title of this article?--MorrisIV (talk) 19:40, 17 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The problem of all the Thai names is what you already mentioned. Here is (like in Lin Dan for instance) the first part the family name. For Lin you also find Dan Lin as name, too. If you translate Ratchanok's Thai name (รัชนก อินทนนท์) for instance on http://www.thai2english.com/online/ you will get rát nók · in-tá-non, so the correct order is probably Ratchanok Inthanon. BUT: A lot of Thai people (or a lot of Chinese immigrants to the USA, see for instance Wu Chibing) also famous outside of Thailand are using the European/American way of spelling to show, what is the family name. --Florentyna (talk) 21:34, 17 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Um, no. Her given name is Ratchanok, and Inthanon is her surname, simple as that. Those sources you mention may simply be mistaken, or they may be intentionally listing her surname first. --Paul_012 (talk) 03:09, 18 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Paul_012 and Florentyna for y'alls input. BTW, the sources that I referred to were the tournamentsoftware which posts live results of official BWF competitions and the Badminton World Federation website itself. --MorrisIV (talk) 03:16, 18 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
To me, the order of the first name and surname is not so important (this is all open to debate due to translation issues etc.) What is more important, is that her actual surname (i.e. family name) is identified and used throughout the article. I believe, based on her father's name, that her surname is 'Inthanon', but she is referred to throughout the article as 'Ratchanok'. Would this not be the equivalent of continuously referring to Bill Gates as "Bill" in his article? C.harrison1988 (talk) 04:38, 12 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
My mistake, according to the Manual of Style for Thai related articles in "article content, use the first name only when referring to a previously introduced person again, instead of the last name". C.harrison1988 (talk) 04:50, 12 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Intanon or Inthanon?

[edit]

Is her surname Intanon or Inthanon? At least on tournamentsoftware.com it's Intanon. --Stryn (talk) 11:54, 11 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There are until now no official rules for the transkription of Thai names to English, so a lot of different spellings can occur for one and the same person. So it is not possible to say, which form is more correct. --Florentyna (talk) 13:16, 11 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The Intanon spelling appears to be overwhelmingly more common. I'd presume it matches her preference, and is officially used in competitions, etc. If this is case, the article should be renamed. --Paul_012 (talk) 19:43, 11 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
More importantly, the article should use a consistent spelling. Whether or not we choose Inthanon or Intanon (personally I would use whatever the BWF uses as that could be considered to be her "professional name") we should use that one spelling consistently throughout the article. At the moment, her father's name is spelt differently from the way her surname is spelt throughout the rest of the article. This is confusing C.harrison1988 (talk) 04:33, 12 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It's not uncommon for persons of the same family to spell their surnames differently on their passports. If her father actually spells his name differently, I think it should be respected (with probably a footnote for clarification). This needs to be proven, though. --Paul_012 (talk) 09:05, 13 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Good point and if that is actually the case, then absolutely. But in this case, I have a hunch this is just further proof that the more consistent and relevant spelling of her name is Intanon. — Preceding unsigned comment added by C.harrison1988 (talkcontribs) 11:56, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
So what are we going to do about this? At the moment we are setting a precedent by spelling it as "Inthanon". Other sources will take our lead. For example Facebook has directly copied our spelling. Also I wouldn't be surprised if news articles have taken the spelling here on Wikipedia as the "official" spelling. The BWF spells it "Intanon". As they are the recognised world badminton authority I believe we should follow their lead. Because she is primarily notable for being a badminton player, the name she uses officially in badminton should be her official name. If no one has any objections I will change the article title to "Intanon" in the next few days. What do people think of this? C.harrison1988 (talk) 04:27, 13 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ratchanok InthanonRatchanok Intanon – She is a badminton player, the world badminton authority (BWF) uses this name. The current name is an alternative translation from the Thai script and is valid but not as official as the one the BWF uses. I can't link directly to her official profile because the website uses AJAX, but please go here and start typing her name: http://www.bwfbadminton.org/page.aspx?id=15539 Please see the discussion 'Intanon or Inthanon' above. Orphaned references in Ratchanok Intanon

[edit]

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Ratchanok Intanon's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.
