The following text was added to the article by RHeaton. As it does not yet contain references, and as it also contains discussion items and suggestions that would need to be followed up to update the article, it is placed here to encourage further action:

"An incomplete substitute for Hue and Cry appears to exist for 1772 to 1785 which would be worth comparing to surviving early issues for the publication usually cited as the Geenral Hue and Cry runs 1773 - 1776 [?] ESTC, while the Hue and Cry or Police Gazette commences c. 1794 (issued once every three weeks. This was replaced in 1828 by Police Gazette or Hue and Cry, and which in turn was replaced by several succeeding titles and printers. Sketches of Prisoners appear from 1880 and "Wanted Notices" issued with the Paper(based on two known surviving examples the earliest being for Henry Douglas Kino issued with 2nd April 1880) appear around the same time. While England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland were all covered by the Gazette, at there was at least one other regional specific Gazette issued. An incomplete run is being digitalised from one of the largest private collections and will be made available at LastChanceToRead."

Points to note:

  • 'Hue and Cry' name needs a reference.
  • What is 'General Hue and Cry', why do the dates overlap, and what is the reference?
  • What is ESTC?
  • What started in 1794 and why does it overlap with the other two? What reference?
  • What changed in 1828, since the title(s) seem to be identical? Reference?
  • What were the several succeeding titles and printers? References?
  • Reference for Sketches of Prisoners from 1880?
  • Reference for Wanted Notices from 1880?
  • References and details for regional Gazettes?
  • LastChangeToRead must be placed in a footnote or list of External sites.

Irish Edition

[edit]

There was a separate Irish edition of Hue and Cry published every Tuesday and Friday. It largely contained notices from the Dublin Metropolitan Police and the Royal Irish Constabulary. The PSNI's Ulster Police Museum has reprinted the 1 August 1879 edition for training purposes. Deipnosophista (talk) 12:06, 7 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a citation we can use for that? Chiswick Chap (talk) 15:58, 7 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Where is it?

[edit]

The link referenced in 'it is published today' only gives old microfilms. What is its address and where can you get it? Or does it even exist? 2.28.168.115 (talk) 23:43, 26 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
