History note
[edit]For purposes of attribution, please note that some of the text in the page Pedestal may at various times have been copied across from the page Plinth, which is about more or less the same subject. Anthony Appleyard (talk) 16:43, 22 January 2018 (UTC)
Origin of the name
[edit]Is there any reference to this word originating from French piédestal or Italian piedistallo, as affirmed in the lead? Considering that pedestal is spelled exactly the same way in Spanish and Portuguese, it makes much more sense to believe it's a loanword from one of these two languages. —capmo (talk) 17:16, 29 December 2023 (UTC)
- Visually the words are similar, but that's not really how etymology works. Scientifically, we can locate the origins of most words with fairly high confidence because we can track how their use changed over time. However, the Manual of Style discourages unnecessary etymologies in the lead sentence of an article, so I've removed it. Shpowell (talk) 21:13, 4 May 2025 (UTC)
