Cleanup

[edit]

This article is unsalvagable. Writing is muddled & repetitive, contradictory, full of errors, typos, incomplete sentences; the subject is not clearly notable; there is another similar article. This needs to be totally rewritten or else just deleted. I don't know the proper tags, but I hope someone will come in and affix them - this is an embarrassment to Wikipedia. 209.150.54.58 03:48, 12 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I added a cleanup tag to the article and removed a walking tour section (wikipedia isn't a travel guide). I was in doubt whether I would post the article at articles for deletion (as the notability of this neighborhood isn't clear to me. The article states that it's notable for having a large italian and albanian immigrant population, but with this reasoning thousands of neighborhood in the world could be added) or just add a cleanup tag. I went for the latter to give the article a chance. Seeing additional reasons of why this neighborhood is notable would be nice though. -- NathanoNL [ usr | msg | log ] 01:45, 25 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I am a new user of Wickipedia and I am trying to create an article that accurately reflects the character of this historic NYC neighborhood. The original claims at the top of this page that the article was unsalvageable..muddled,repetitive,etc was directed at a previous version which I am attempting to make more accurate and informative. The comment was written in Nov 2006 and the old version stood until I edited in Jan 2009.You say that you would like to see reasons why this neighborhood is notable, yet you eliminated the walking tour which points out the buildings and architectural features that are the very reasons why the Historic District is being created.I don't understand the logic. How do you suggest that I "clean up" this article? I tried to create new sections but have not mastered .Please help I also added information on the historical importance of the Jewish settlement in in this neighborhood which addressed the warranted criticism of another viewer(see below).Canoeboy (talk) 04:42, 25 January 2009 (UTC)I).[reply]
First of all, I would like to make clear that my critique wasn't personal. I see that I smacked the cleanup tag on the article right after you put quite a lot of work in it, which might have been a bit uncivil of me, so my apologies if I offended you.
That being said, I still think there's quite a bit of work to be done. I still am convinced that a walking tour doesn't belong in the article, however, if the buildings mentioned in the tour are notable, that is good information to put in the article, it should just be rewritten so that it fits in with the rest (e.g. no walking/driving directions, and changing the formatting/wording so it reads as a coherent paragraph.
Also, there's currently only one source for the article (which mainly gives statistics on the Bronx). In theory, everything in an article should be properly sourced. In practice this can be hard, because good sources are often hard to find. Just try to cover most of the information in the article with sources (especially information that may be disputed, though that won't be applicable much here). For example, for the buildings mentioned earlier the page with the walking tour might be a source.
Finally, there's a lot of layout fixing and wikilinking (adding links to other wikipedia pages where applicable) to be done. A good tutorial on wikipedia syntax can be found here. (most importantly, you can create links to other wikipedia articles by putting text between angled brackets, so [[test]] becomes test. Headings are created by placing text between equal signs like this: ==heading== (for an underlined heading) or ===heading=== (for a heading without underline))
Because I don't want to be a person who only sets demands and lets others do the work I'm willing to help improve the article. Please note however that I've never set a foot in the Bronx or America for that matter, so my knowledge on the subject is neglectable. I can help with the syntax and layout though, and I can help in finding sources for the provided information. Right now I'm going to bed, but tomorrow I'll try to make a start with the layout/wikilinking. -- NathanoNL [ usr | msg | log] 05:43, 25 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much for your response and for your suggestions.I am willing to take the time to clean up and add to the article as you suggest. It will, however, take some time as I am a new user suffering from a deficiency of Wikipedia mechanical knowledge and some time constraints. There are pictures available of the Pelham Parkway subway station that I inserted information on and pictures of some of the buildings and architectural details important to the historic district.Would it be permissable to write the info on these subjects to fit the rest (not in a tour format) and insert pictures?Do I have to upload the pictures to another area before including in the article? I will also work on the sources. Thanks again.Canoeboy (talk) 15:41, 25 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I saw you added some references, well done, those are of very good quality. References in wikipedia have a slightly different syntax than internal links, like this: <ref>link to reference</ref>. In this way, wikipedia knows it's not just a link, but a link to a reference. Also, they get added to the reference list at the bottom of the page automatically this way. (I fixed the syntax for the ones you added)
As for pictures, a few good pictures can add to the acticles quality, so feel free to add them. There's a page with explanation here (basics) and here (extended syntax). Note that wikipedia has quite a stict policy regarding image copyright. If the images are in the public domain or made by yourself, you can upload them to Wikimedia Commons. If the images aren't in the public domain, you have to upload them at Special:Upload (instructions).
The info on the buildings can be added too of course. I didn't remove that information earlier because the info shouldn't have belonged in the article, but because it was a copy/paste in walking tour format. As for the article's structure, I think it would be a good idea to merge the "Pelham Parkway/White Plains Road Station" section with the "Transportation" section. Also, the "Urban revival" section could be merged with the "Demographics" section. Last but not least, I think it would be best if the "facts" section was merged in with the rest of the article, so they become part of the story instead of just loose facts. I added some wikisyntax to the article, mainly links to other wikipedia articles and headings (I saw you did a few of those too, good job)
Let me know what you think about these merges, and if you run into any problems with the images feel free to ask for help. (I'm quite a newbie around here myself too, I only started editing two months ago, we all gotta learn). And oh yeah, don't worry about time constraints, there's no rush. If it takes months to improve the article, that's ok, just do the editing when you have time to spare and feel like it. -- NathanoNL [ usr | msg | log ] 22:37, 27 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks again.Looking much better.I think your suggestions are great and will continue to work on it as time permits.Canoeboy (talk) 01:52, 28 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Populations

[edit]

Shalom Alechiem! A large aging Jewish population remains in the neighborhood. I am a Jew and I lived there recently. Is this a crime to say this? Albanians are mentioned. Why not Jews? 67.87.92.56 21:47, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Pelham Parkway is a noun

[edit]

"When speaking of the neighborhood rather than the road, Pelham Parkway is usually a noun . . ."

Yes, most parkways are nouns. Thanks for the analysis, but I think most literate people are aware that Pelham Parkway is a noun. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.147.115.53 (talk) 22:29, 20 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Transportation

[edit]

Two things I was wondering - 1. Wouldn't the 5 train stopping at Pelham Parkway count as being in the neighborhood, making it 4 stations accessible instead of 3? 2. Is the Bx12 Select Bus Service worth noting, since it's local service is noted?

I wouldn't want to go ahead with the first one especially without an input. ~kiddRell_ (talk) 15:55, 24 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

These are not exactly encyclopedic details. Epicgenius (talk) 20:29, 20 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Names

[edit]

The neighborhood has been called Pelham Parkway for at least 100 years. Bronx Park East is only a street and a section of that neighborhood...Modernist (talk) 23:30, 6 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, so I have put the disambiguator " (neighborhood)". Epicgenius (talk) 20:29, 20 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
