[edit]why canadian english?
[edit]participants were u.s., french and afghan. operation was in afghanistan. what affiliation is there to canadian english?--71.167.157.17 (talk) 16:18, 2 March 2012 (UTC)
- The article does not have strong ties to a particular English-speaking nation. Therefore MOS:RETAIN requires that the article consistently use the variety of English of the first non-stub revision, which happens to be Canadian English. Mathew5000 (talk) 17:26, 3 March 2012 (UTC)
the article asserts 200 U.S. special forces were involved. this is not a tie to a particular english-speaking nation?--71.167.157.17 (talk) 18:47, 3 March 2012 (UTC)
- Yes, it is a tie, but not a "strong tie" because the operation was primarily French. Wikipedia policy MOS:TIES applies when the topic of the article has "strong ties" to a particular English-speaking nation. Even though Operation Septentrion has stronger ties to the US than to any other English-speaking nation, that doesn't necessarily constitute strong ties. Mathew5000 (talk) 19:50, 3 March 2012 (UTC)
italicization
[edit]Regarding this edit, you are misunderstanding WP:ITALIC. It provides: “Wikipedia prefers italics for phrases in other languages and for isolated foreign words”. It certainly does not say to italicize article titles, or blocks of quoted text, that happen to be in a foreign language. Mathew5000 (talk) 17:34, 3 March 2012 (UTC)
- what is a title in a foreign language if not a phrase in another language?--71.167.157.17 (talk) 18:42, 3 March 2012 (UTC)
- A title is not a phrase. Mathew5000 (talk) 19:45, 3 March 2012 (UTC)
