Translation?

"Acquisitions" doesn't seem quite correct as translation. In defence parlance, acquisition is typically the same as procurement, i.e. purchases of equipment. Inhämtning, "gathering", should rather be translated as (intelligence) collection into "milspeak", so more correct translated names would rather be "Office for Special Collection" or possibly "Office for Special Intelligence Collection". Agreed, especially as the term "HUMINT" in tends to be translated Swedish as personbaserad underrättelseinhämtning - "person-based intelligence gathering." Office of Special Collection fits the best to my mind. LordXaras (talk) 17:27, 6 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The "Folkets Lexikon" Dictionary defines "inhämnta" (verb which inhämtning comes from) as "obtain, aquire". Speaking of intelligence I'd say you aquire it. But I don't think you can consider Folkets Lexikon a reliable source for military terminology in neither Swedish nor English. Do you have any professional defence/military/intelligence examples to cite where (underrättelse)inhämtning has been translated to acquistion? Tomas e (talk) 12:37, 11 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Its based on Lexin (which has the same translation), which is the dictionary of Språkrådet - Sweden's official language control agency so I'd say that the translation would be correct if its in the dictionary by the institution which regulates the language ;) ProbablyX (talk) 15:14, 14 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

WP:NAME states: "If there is no established English treatment for a name, translate it if this can be done without loss of accuracy and with greater understanding for the English-speaking reader." If it's not possible to accurately translate the name, and no commonly used English translation exists, maybe we should locate the article at its Swedish name, Kontoret för Särskild Inhämtning?
