Noel Baring Hudson was born in (?), son of Thomas William Hudson, who was at one time headmaster of St Edward's School, Oxford. He fought in the First World War alongside several of his brothers, witnessing the death of two of them under shellfire at Ypres. Later in the war he was raised to the rank of Brigadier-in-the-field.

He also played, again alongside his brothers, for Harlequins R.F.C., and was captain for a time. He moved into the clergy, ultimately serving as Bishop of Ely from 1957-1964.
