[edit]

I find the article about Porpora to be almost an abomination. To describe him as a Baroque opera composer means to forget an important of his achievements as a composer of other musical forms (oratorio, psalms settings, antiphons, etc.) The criticism on the bottom of the page only refers to ONE of his operas and criticizes his composition skills from a very superficial point of view. In my opinion, it is clear that the person who wrote that section doesn't really know Porpora's music to be able to write a well-founded opinion about him. Taking the wrong work from any composer can show him of his bad side, even if it is Handel, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert or any other great composer. I hope this page is not taken as basis for Wikipedia articles about Porpora in other languages. 141.54.152.17 (talk) 01:31, 17 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Assessment comment

The comment(s) below were originally left at Talk:Nicola Porpora/Comments, and are posted here for posterity. Following several discussions in past years, these subpages are now deprecated. The comments may be irrelevant or outdated; if so, please feel free to remove this section.

I think the page has an excessively critical tone with regard to Porpora's work, which I and many others feel is very nice. I think it displays a common bias among musicologists against the work of composers not recognized as "great" - i.e., not household names among the uneducated. Perhaps the "criticisms" section could include citations of who made the criticisms, be prefaced with a statement like, "Some people find Porpora's work bland, boring, etc.," or - better yet - balanced with a section discussing the positive aspects of his output and his undeniably significant influence on the music of both the late baroque and classical periods. I only regret that I don't have the necessary expertise about Porpora specifically to write these sections myself.69.17.14.247 (talk) 04:29, 28 July 2008 (UTC)Dana Scheider[reply]

Martines's teacher

[edit]

In her autobiography Marianna von Martines doesn't name Porpora among her teachers.--Suessmayr (talk) 09:24, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
