Rivals?

[edit]

Is it really necessary to put "main rivals" on this? I think its not needed, not "factual", and has a POV problem. Benje309 17:38, 23 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Actual players

Must this article list Spike Lee among the names of actual players on the Knicks? They have plenty of celebrity fans. --feitclub 16:18, Jun 16, 2005 (UTC)

Grammar

[edit]

There's a lot of names in the "Knicks are the worst organization in the NBA" section that are clearly not basketball players...Chuck Norris? Someone should double-check that part of the article.

The word "would" is used a gazillion times in the article. Can't it be written in a more user-friendly manner? elpincha 22:39, 3 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Guilty as charged ;-). But if you thought that my version wasn't user-friendly, then you should have seen the version I had to replace. It was written very poorly, and glanced over the past twenty years or so of the franchise, while it also included a dvd shill as well. I admit that my grammar is bad, but the team does deserve a detailed history. ErikNY 16:02, 5 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The following quotation is from the introduction of the New York Knicks article. They are known to be in a conspiracy with David Stern."

Actual Name

[edit]

It says in the article that the team's name is "The Knickerbockers" but they are mostly know as the "Knicks". Isn't there official name currently the Knicks? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.68.105.22 (talk) 22:33, 27 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, the team official name is the New York Knickerbockers, and I also think the name of the article should be changed. Brady4mvp (talk) 22:08, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Brady, You are absolutely correct. I called the Knicks off to inquire about this, and I was told that the team's official name is "Knickerbockers." But, don't waste too much time on this. The people who control Wikipedia insist on referring to this team by its more popular nickname. 24.9.74.139 (talk) 01:03, 11 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Responding from a post from five years ago? Priceless. Anyways, it is made clear what their actual name is in the introduction of the article and also makes note of it when Ned Irish named the team. That said, the shortened version is most popular and is even on their jerseys for chrissakes. -- The Writer 2.0 Talk 15:50, 11 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I had this same argument in the 1970s with someone who claimed the baseball team in Oakland was named the "A's," and not the "Athletics." After all, it didn't say "Athletics" on the team's jersey, it said "A's." But, as things often do when you give them enough time, it all came around. It now says "Athletics" again on the jerseys, and no one today is denying that "A's" is just a shortened version of "Athletics." Well, the Knicks front office told me that the official name of the basketball team is the "Knickerbockers." But, what does the team know? People here on wikipedia seem to know better. As I warned the person above, don't bother changing the name or arguing with anyone here. They'll just keep changing it back. I haven't changed the name on wikipedia, and I won't. Life is too short to waste time on this. But, I'll stop by after the day comes (and, at some point in the future, it will come) when the team puts "Knickerbockers" on their jersey. When that happens, I wonder how fast the name will be changed on wikipedia. 24.9.74.139 (talk) 04:29, 16 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I have never seen such a long winded explanation stating that you'll actually take time to gloat if that actually happens. Talk about an inflated ego. -- The Writer 2.0 Talk 17:09, 16 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Depth Chart should be removed

[edit]

I believe that depth charts are very arbitrary. Players are often substitued in for positions other than those listed in the depth chart as well as in different orders. It is for this reason that i believe they serve no purpose on wikipedia. With your help, we can eliminate all the depth charts on wikipedia! Record?

[edit]

A wikipedia entry on the Knicks is completely remiss without a listing of the team's yearly W-L record for its entire history. GM info

[edit]

User:Sabbatino is repeatedly removing properly cited information. Enough!Sylvain1972 (talk) 19:23, 28 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Sylvain1972: First of all, you should read WP:VANDALISM and get familiar with what is or what is not vandalism. You should also read WP:BRD, which specifically says that you must not reinstate the reverted content until you discuss it. Secondly, you are adding factually inaccurate content. None of your added sources say anything about what you tend to claim. Only in recent times some NBA teams started giving president of basketball operations and general manager roles to the same person. Most teams (including the Knicks) still hire different people for these positions, which has been in the NBA since the league's start. Thirdly, you should get familiar with Manual of Style before continuing to make any more edits as the grammar of your additions is very poor and should be improved if you want to do something here. Your additions were again reverted so do not try to reinstate them until you engage in a discussion. – Sabbatino (talk) 21:00, 28 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
There is nothing wrong with my grammar. Perhaps English isn't your first language, because it is your own grammar which is a mess. You should address that if you'd like to continue editing Wikipedia. You seem to be having some trouble with your reading comprehension of the source article, because it does support my claim. The yahoo article clearly states that Mills was at one point both president and GM. If you wish to delete the broader claim in the first sentence, fine, but the following two sentences are properly cited and the article needs to say something about the GM position in the management subsection.Sylvain1972 (talk) 15:46, 30 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Sylvain1972: Settle down. You do not need to become hostile and start personal attacks just because you were wrong and introduced factual inaccuracies. Saying that someone has "trouble with your reading comprehension" does not help it so you should really get familiar with Wikipedia's policies before continuing to personally attack other editors. It is praisable that you finally understood what was wrong and fixed it. Next time start a discussion if you get reverted, because that is what WP:BRD policy about (which you previously broke). – Sabbatino (talk) 06:45, 31 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
On the contrary, you should settle down. I have been nothing but civil in the face of your personal attacks. I suggest that you review Wikipedia's policies, seek professional treatment, or whatever else will make it more likely you'll be able to edit effectively in the future. Knicks or Knickerbockers? Revisited

[edit]

2018 update- I don’t think there was enough legitimate discussion about what is the official name of the team. According to the Madison Square Garden Company’s 10-K SEC Filing for 2018, they refer to the team as New York Knicks, not New York Knickerbockers. [1] There’s even another New York Knicks entity called New York Knicks, LLC, however I will do more research on that.[2] While there is evidence that the team use(d) the name New York Knickerbockers officially and still do, saying that the name New York Knicks is not an official name is incorrect cause that name is indeed used officially. So at some point there is a possibility that the team did change their name to New York Knicks and maybe the Knicks organization that operates the team is referred to as New York Knickerbockers. This is worthy of discussion.Granthew (talk) 07:45, 21 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

There was a discussion about this at WT:NBA and this has been asked in this talk page more than once. In addition, there are two references (both are working) in the lead for that and both are directly from the team. The "Knickerbocker" name is used in your first source and here. It is evident that the team's full name is the "New York Knickerbockers" and the "New York Knicks" is just a short form – Sabbatino (talk) 13:43, 21 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I checked out the references and it does have Knickerbockers as an official name, however, it is a possibility that the Knicks name is an official name as well, maybe the organization that operates the team is called Knickerbockers and the team is called the Knicks (and was once called the Knickerbockers), this possibility has never been brought up before.Granthew (talk) 16:12, 21 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Knickerbocker Group LLC was established in 1985 as Bravo Sailing Corporation and change it’s name to Knickerbocker Group in 2008, according to CorporateWiki.com. Like I said, there is an entity called New York Knicks LLC and will try to figure out what that is.Granthew (talk) 18:34, 21 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to add in "2017–present: Post-Anthony and rebuilding" section more information about Kristaps Porzingis, https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Kristaps_Porzi%C5%86%C4%A3is

1) On 6 February 2018, in a 103–89 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks,[53] Porziņģis tore his left ACL.[54] He was subsequently ruled out for the rest of the season.

2) In October 2018, the Knicks decided against signing Porziņģis to a rookie extension, a move that will give New York an extra $10 million in cap space in the summer of 2019 while making Porziņģis a restricted free agent in the offseason.[55] Due to recovering from his ACL injury, Porziņģis did not play for the Knicks during the 2018–19 season.

3) On 31 January 2019, after a meeting with the Knicks left franchise officials with the impression that he wanted to be traded,[56] Porziņģis was traded alongside Trey Burke, Tim Hardaway Jr. and Courtney Lee to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for DeAndre Jordan, Wesley Matthews, Dennis Smith Jr., an unprotected 2021 first-round draft pick, and an additional top-ten protected 2023 first round draft pick.[57][58]

The Knicks made significant moves in the '24 offseason that are not covered.

Consider this for the end of the "2012–present: modern era" section:

"The New York Knicks made significant moves in the 2024 offseason, reshaping their roster. On July 6, they acquired Mikal Bridges from the Brooklyn Nets for a package including multiple first-round picks [239]. On June 26, they reached an agreement to re-sign OG Anunoby to a five-year, $212.5 million contract [269]. And on October 2, they acquired Karl-Anthony Towns, sending Julius Randle, Donte DiVincenzo, and a 2025 first-round pick to the Minnesota Timberwolves in a three-team deal [233]."
