Needs more non-political info

[edit]

Would be good to get some more non-political info into this article, such as Nandor's ethnic makeup etc. His webiste would be a good start: http://www.nandor.net.nz/Christiaan 12:21, 30 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Father's name Peter Tanczos left Hungary in 1956 after the Revolution but ferried people out and food in until they closed the border on the Danube early 1957. 3 months as a refugee in Vienna before being allowed into England. Met my mother in 1957 at the Hammersmith Palais in London. Married 1958.

Mother's name Joan Magdalene Tanczos, Cape Coloured, left South Africa in 1957 as personal assistant to her father while he attended a conference for the International League for the Rights of Man (ILRM) held in Switzerland. As the apartheid legislation intensified with the Riotous Assemblies Act and the revalidation of the Separate Representation of Voters Act passed in '56 and the womens strike against the pass laws that same year, He recommended she didn't return to South Africa with him and stayed with her cousin in London. He had to return for the sake of the rest of his family. He was a Boer (Afrikaaner) who married a Cape Coloured woman prior to apartheid becoming established. Apartheid split the family down the middle as he opted to be classified as coloured with his wife and children. Ethnicity amongst Cape Coloureds is always tricky but the Jeptha's claim Khoisan and Javanese roots (at least according to my Grandmother)

Brother(me) Peter George Edward Tanczos b.1961. Greenford, England. Nandor and I share the same birthday although we're 5 years apart.

Children; Pirimaia and Almos/Te Hau. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Peter Tanczos (talkcontribs) 20:05, 19 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Accents in name

[edit]

[1] gives his name as "TÁNCZOS, Nándor" - should this article be moved to Nándor Tánczos?

As far as I can tell, he uses the unaccented form more frequently, and I haven't seen any other official publication using the accents. I'd recommend keeping the article where it is, myself. -- Vardion 05:39, 22 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Just another note: I live in his electorate and the ballot paper had the accents. porges 22:34, 19 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
in internal GP communications and in emails, he uses the form with accents more and more. I think previous use of without the accent was because previous email and web couldn't show them (easily and consistently). If wikipedia can support them, and there is a redirect from the non-accented version to the accented one, then I think it should be moved. - Drstuey 00:02, 7 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Full name

[edit]

Here's a copy of the official NZ Gazette [2] (PDF) where I got the name from, if anyone cares to look.

I'm Nandor's brother and he was christened Nandor Stephen Tanczos. Our branch of the family dropped the accented spelling when my father came to England. It was just expediency as English typing (and subsequent Data entry) didn't allow for them. Nandor uses the correct Hungarian spelling of his name although not the sequence (surname first)

Categories

[edit]

There seems to be a bit of disagreement over what categories he should be added to. NZ politicians was removed with the justification "redundant". I disagree it is redundant - he is a NZ politician, so I put it back. Similarly NZ activist was added. I don't understand that one. Internationally on wikipedia, "activist" is used to categorise people by occupation - but Nandor's occupation is not an activist he is a MP. So I have removed activist again. But happy to hear more opinion/justification for it here. - Drstuey 00:08, 7 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

When you removed Category:New Zealand left-wing activists, the reason you gave was that Nandor is not left-wing. I agree with you there. However I don't buy the argument that he is not an activist because he is an MP. For example, the articles for Sue Bradford and Hone Harawira categorise both of them as activists. Perhaps they are clearer cases than Nandor, and what constitutes "activism" is often subjective. But Nandor describes himself here as having moved from "grassroots activism to parliamentary activism", and I think we should respect that.
Regarding redundant categories, we usually don't include an article in both a category and one of its sub-categories (or sub-sub-categories). So Category:Green Party of Aotearoa New Zealand was redundant given that Category:Green Party of Aotearoa New Zealand MPs was being used, and so is Category:New Zealand politicians (because MPs are politicians). But the latter is less obvious, and keeping this category might help people find this article, so on reflection I don't mind it being there. -- Avenue 02:40, 7 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
