Requested move 6 November 2020
[edit]- The following discussion is an archived discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.
Moved to country-disambiguated titles. There is a clear consensus to move, but no clear consensus as to which alternative raised in the discussion should be chosen. Since there is no specific likelihood of country confusion between the two subjects under examination, and this broadly seems to be the least objectionable option in the discussion, I will move the pages accordingly. - Mario Ortiz Ruiz → Mario Ortiz (footballer, born 1989)
- Mario Virginio Ortiz → Mario Ortiz (footballer, born 1983)
– WP:COMMONNAME for both is just "Mario Ortiz", neither use maternal surname or middle name professionally. Disambiguate to standard for footballers. Source for Spanish footballer: 1, 2, 3, 4, all refs on page. For Mexican footballer: 1, 2, 3. Ortizesp (talk) 14:24, 6 November 2020 (UTC)
- Comment alternative option is Mario Ortiz Ruiz → Mario Ortiz (Spanish footballer), Mario Virginio Ortiz → Mario Ortiz (Mexican footballer). I have no real preference, and both have good arguments.--Ortizesp (talk) 14:25, 6 November 2020 (UTC)
- Oppose main option. Per Wikipedia:Naming conventions (people)#Disambiguating: "Years of birth and death are not normally used as disambiguators (readers are more likely to be seeking this information than to already know it)". Years of birth are only used when there is no other reasonable disambiguator, such as when people of the same name have the same profession and nationality. Nationality is a standard disambiguator for soccer players per Wikipedia:Naming conventions (sportspeople)#Association football (soccer). Searchers are more likely to know the nationality rather than the maternal surname or birth year. DrKay (talk) 17:51, 6 November 2020 (UTC)
- Support removal of maternal surnames and use of parenthetical qualifiers specifying nationalities, per comment by Ortizesp and oppose vote by DrKay. However, if consensus were to skew towards the use of birth years, I would also support that form. —Roman Spinner (talk • contribs) 19:28, 6 November 2020 (UTC)

- Support per Wikipedia:Naming conventions (sportspeople)#Association football (soccer) which gives equal importance to YOB as to nationality, and reflecting long-held convention at WP:FOOTBALL that prefers YOB to nationality given that nationality in football is fluid. GiantSnowman 12:24, 9 November 2020 (UTC)
- Support alternative option. Nationality is a useful qualifier here, and preferred by WP:NCPDAB. --BDD (talk) 20:16, 30 November 2020 (UTC)
- Support original option only the nationality disambiguator seems to be DrKay's pet project crusade, and most football articles are disambiguated by year of birth. If you want to challenge that, start an RFC on it at WT:FOOTY. But original option is the correct option. Joseph2302 (talk) 11:18, 4 December 2020 (UTC)
- Don't harass me please. I don't wish to challenge the current guidance, which is why I have not done so. Indeed, I'm directly quoting it above as part of my rationale. See Wikipedia:Civility#Identifying incivility: points 1d and 2e. DrKay (talk) 11:38, 4 December 2020 (UTC)
- Every time somebody replies to one of your comments is not "harassment". Do not throw out such serious & unsubstantiated accusations. GiantSnowman 20:54, 13 December 2020 (UTC)
- It's not a reply. It's just a blatant misrepresentation, deliberately designed to belittle and abuse, like yours. DrKay (talk) 20:58, 13 December 2020 (UTC)
