Malinau is a town

[edit]

This article needs to be retitled. Malinau is a town, not a city! I would have made the change myself, but unfortunately someone (presumably the person who doesn't know the difference between a city and a town, or between a town and a Regency!) has put in an automatic redirect from the name "Malinau" to the Malinau Regency article, thereby preventing anyone from correcting the title of this article. Rif Winfield (talk) 14:57, 26 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, Kota Malinau (the way this is properly written in Bahasa Indonesia) is indeed a town. @Rif Winfield: I'm not sure why your first assumption is that I don't know the difference between a city and town, or town and regency. It might be worth reviewing Wikipedia's guideline to "comment on content, not on the contributor" as well as the rest of the talk page guidelines and best practices.
As a speaker of Bahasa Indonesia who lived in Malinau Regency, I am well aware of the differences between a kota and kabupaten. I am also aware of the difference between a city an a town in English. However, when translating from Bahasa Indonesia to English, kota is usually translated as city. This is particularly true in instances where a kota is also a kecamatan (sub-district) and the administrative capital of a regency (kabupaten), as is the case with Kota Malinau. In English-language media in Indonesia, both locally in Kabupaten Malinau and more broadly, Kota Malinau is generally referred to as "Malinau City". Thus, I followed this convention. Please see these well-regarded sources use of the title "Malinau City": source 1, source 2, source 3 and source 4. You may also not that the page City status in Indonesia translates kota as city. If people are uncomfortable following the common use of "Malinau City" then this article should be title Kota Malinau, which is proper Bahasa Indonesia, not Malinau Kota, which is not.
I don't think that I created the automatic redirect from the name "Malinau" to the Malinau Regency article, however, I believe that that is the correct redirect (if any needs to exist). When people say "Malinau" in both Bahasa Indonesia and English they are generally referring to the Kabupaten Malinau, not the kota. Kota Malinau's main reason for being called Kota Malinau is because of its role as the administrative capital of the kabupaten. --Zandrsn (talk) 17:34, 6 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
    • Thank you, and I would suggest that the article's title could be given as "Malinau (town) or Kota Malinau". The population total for the town could be updated to the 2015 figure of 23,833 given by BPS. Also please accept my sincere apologies for commenting on the contributor rather than the contribution. Your own local knowledge is invaluable! I have just revised the article on Kabupaten Malinau to incorporate district areas and 2015 populations (taken from https://malinaukab.bps.go.id/statictable/2015/04/26/22/luas-wilayah) and to note the creation of three new districts (kecamatan) in 2012; I hope this meets with your approval. • Thank you for this. I very much appreciate your response. I think your suggested new title - "Malinau (town) or Kota Malinau" - is an excellent solution. I would also be happy to contribute to updating the pages for Kabupaten Malinau and those of other administrative units in North and East Kalimantan. In regards to Kabupaten Malinau and Kota Malinau, the Malinau Regency Statistics Agency recently released projected population numbers for each district for 2019 here and in this publication, and lists the population of Kota Malinau as 27,797. I can update the population numbers on both pages if you think that "projected" numbers are adequate. Knowing how these statistics agencies often operate, I wouldn't expect "real" numbers to be published any time soon. Please let me know what you think. Thanks. --Zandrsn (talk) 18:22, 8 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
        • That's fine with me. I suggest that you substitute the 2019 figures for the 2015 ones I have tabulated in Kabupaten Malinau; I suggest however that you describe these as "2019 Estimate" rather than "2019 Projected". I shall be most happy if you would amend the pages for Bulungan, Nunakan and Tana Tidung Regencies, and for Tarakan City, in the same way as I have done for Malinau Regency, i.e. inserting columns for area (in km2) and 2019 Estimate (of population) for each kecamatan. The provincial page (North Kalimantan) is already updated. We can move on to Kalimantan Timur when this is done. Meantime I suggest that this is enough to include on Talk:Malinau Kota; we can continue this on our own talk pages (see User talk:Rif Winfield). Or you can email me on tanparcau@btopenworld.com. Better. Onegreatjoke (talk) 20:10, 3 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

What's so special?

[edit]

This pattern of a "disproportionate" number of restaurants in the densest part of a jurisdiction is widespread throughout the world. So why is this fact presented as unique for DYK?

This looks like another example of bloviation to get notoriety via DYK. Self-nomination and quickie promotion should be prevented so that better vetting and a clearer overview of notability can occur. Martindo (talk) 01:11, 27 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I will be refering to the one that approved the nomination, @Onegreatjoke. I simply expand the article and find anything that is possible to be used for DYKN, simply because of the under-represenation of non-Java articles in WP:Indonesia. I had this trouble before with Bataha Santiago where the reviewer find none of the hook "too interesting" and considering to reject it. I find this very discouraging when the more technical aspects such as cited, 5x expansion/GA status are met but reviewers objected it as "uninteresting" because what is "interesting" is subjective. Statistics and simple numbers from government statistics can be interesting, the mundane facts can be interesting. Rather than rejecting a nomination because it is "uninteresting", it would be better to help combat this under-representation by asking the nominator to give an ALT and an article should never be assumed as "having nothing interesting to be nominated".
