Recommendations
[edit]I recommend removing the photo (who decides which rivalry deserves a photo or not?) and making the table wider, allowing more text.
Also, it would be nice if the entries all had about the same length. Some have one sentence, some have many paragraphs. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gpasqualicchio (talk • contribs) 22:03, 8 October 2012 (UTC)
Arizona football
[edit]The Douglas Bulldogs and Bisbee Pumas Arizona football rivalry started in 1906. Last Friday, August 24, they played for the 137th time. This rivalry should be listed here somewhere...
Mt. Carmel v. Joliet Catholic
[edit]According to: http://www.ihsa.org/activity/fb/records/team1-2.htm
Mt. Carmel and Joliet Catholic have only met once to decide a state title. I will not begrudge them being legendary programs in Illinois, but this needs to be restated with more of an explanation. LonelyBeacon 23:48, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
Standards for inclusion
[edit]Per my keep !vote at the AfD for this article, there should probably be some standards for inclusion so as to keep this article manageable. These standards would also apply to List of high school football rivalries (100 years+), and I will cross-post this to that article's talk page and to the AfD for this one accordingly. I think the fear of all of those !voting 'delete' is that everyone and their brother will be adding their alma mater's rivalry, regardless of how notable is is outside of their respective schools. That said, I would propose that anything that can cite reliable sources as to fulfilling any of the following regarding the rivalry or rivalry game is notable enough for inclusion:
- Attracts a number of spectators that is at least either: (1) More than twice the combined student body population of both schools or (2) 10,000 spectators, whichever is larger.
- Is the first or second oldest high school football rivalry in a state or among a class of schools (e.g. public schools, independent schools, parochial schools, etc.) nationally.
- Already has an article on Wikipedia that is properly cited with reliable sources.
- Has been covered by a national or international news source. For example, several games on this list are mentioned as being listed among the top high school football rivalries in the nation by USA Today. Other appropriate news sources for this criterion include (but are not necessarily limited to, as I'm likely leaving some out) the New York Times, CNN, the Washington Post, the Washington Times, MSNBC, Fox News, the Los Angeles Times or non-local affiliates of or national news broadcasts made by ABC, CBS, FOX or NBC.
Comments and suggestions for tweaks to these standards are more than welcome. LaMenta3 02:32, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
- The growth problem seems to have materialized. I have simply removed all entries lacking sources or one that had only one source which was only one of the school's website, which confers no notability. We even had rivalries with red linked schools, which makes it hard to believe the rivalries are particularly notable. Aboutmovies (talk) 08:28, 6 November 2009 (UTC)
Servite High School of Anaheim CA vs. Mater Dei High School of Santa Ana CA
[edit]Servite High School of Anaheim CA vs. Mater Dei High School of Santa Ana CA should be mentioned on this list. The game both easily attracts more than twice the combined student body population of both schools and attracts well over 10,000 fans (estimated 22,000 in 2007 [LA Times]) and has been held many times in Angel Stadium of Anaheim (the latest being 2007). The schools are both football powerhouses in California, Servite having won a CIF championship its first year of participation and having one state champoinship; Mater Dei being one of two high school to produce two or more Heisman winners. The two schools, along with local athletic powerhouses like Santa Margarita, Orange Lutheran, St. John Bosco, and JSerra High Schools. Servite has won its league three years in a row; the Serra League in 2005 and the Trinity League every year since its induction in 2006, but has fallen short against Mater Dei. It is also televized each year throughout Southern California. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Dudemanguy1214 (talk • contribs) 15:48, 29 September 2008 (UTC)
- If you can find and provide reliable sources to support this, then by all means, feel free to add the rivalry to the list! All that is necessary is that the rivalry fulfill one of the criteria above. LaMenta3 (talk) 23:26, 29 September 2008 (UTC)
Items needing sources for notability
[edit]This is a temporary home for list items that potentially have notability as per the proposed criteria, but reliable sources confirming those claims cannot currently be found. If/when they can be found, the items can be returned to the list on the main page.
Series Leader | Series Rival | Series Record | Series Began | Notes | References |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Loveland High School (Loveland, Colorado) | Thompson Valley High School (Loveland, Colorado) | 1976 | The rivalry has continued to be fierce despite the one-sidedness of it, with TVHS winning only 2 of the last 17 yearly meetings. The 2005 meeting was especially intense. During the LHS Marching Band’s halftime performance the TVHS students booed throughout the entire show and some students threw food and drinks onto the field, believed to be retaliation from the 2004 meeting when the LHS football team tackled members of the TVHS band during pre-game warm-up. | ||
Easley High School (Easley, South Carolina) | Pickens High School (Pickens, South Carolina) | 35-16-0 | 1923* | "Only 7 miles separates Pickens and Easley, but 6 feet separates winners and losers!" That sentence is the motto of one of the oldest and fiercest rivalries in the South Carolina High School League: Pickens Blue Flame vs. Easley Green Wave. This rivalry attracts over 7,000 fans a year (record is around 10,000) and has a ferocity that even rivals the Battle of the Palmetto State (If you don't consider the fact that Clemson and South Carolina's fan bases are a lot bigger than Pickens and Easley's). The blackest day in the rivalry was in 1969 when a huge knife fight occured at Pickens High School's football stadium, Bruce Field, requiring the National Guard to be called; the rivalary took a thirteen-year break after that. The most popular tradition of the winning team is to hold a mock funeral for the losing team. | |
South Pittsburg High School (South Pittsburg, Tennessee) | Marion County High School (Jasper, Tennessee) | 41-38-4 | 1924 | This game is the longest, consecutive rivalry in the state of Tennessee, having endured for over 80 years. |
|
Jesuit High School (New Orleans, Louisiana) | Holy Cross High School (New Orleans, Louisiana) | 51-37-2 | 1922 | Holy Cross football vs. Jesuit football is the oldest continuous high school rivalry in Louisiana and one of the oldest continuous high school football rivalries in the United States. The first game was played in 1922 (which Jesuit won 52-0). The two teams have played every year since, including twice in 1963 (once in regular season and again for the state crown, which Holy Cross won). The two teams meet each year in Tad Gormley Stadium in City Park, New Orleans. |
|
Northside High School (Fort Smith, AR) | Southside High School (Fort Smith, AR) | 28-18-2 | 1965 | The annual Northside/Southside game is considered to be one of, if not the biggest football rivalries in the state of Arkansas. Southside HS was built in 1963 after the desegregation of Arkansas public schools. The game has came to be called "The Battle for Rogers Ave." as this is the street that divides the cities north side and south side. The game attracts an average of 10,000 fans each year regardless of either teams record for the season, and is broadcast live throughout the region. The two schools boast 15 state championships between them, with Northside claiming 8 and Southside taking 7 since 1986. The schools compete in the 7A class (the largest in the state), comprising high schools from the Little Rock, AR, Fort Smith, AR, Northwest Arkansas, and Memphis, TN metropolitan areas. |

Marist vs. Brother Rice.
[edit]Kind of surprised this one isn't included. It's a little bit of a shorter rivalry, since it only started in 1975, but they played on 8/31/12 for the 33rd time. With Marist's win, it puts the series record at 17-16 in Rice's favor. The two schools are a mere 2.5 miles apart on the southside of Chicago, which is the main basis of the rivalry. It generally draws in excess of 5000 fans (5500 were quoted at this game), and sometimes uses the Saint Xavier University football stadium for when Rice is the home team — Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.53.155.204 (talk) 08:13, 1 September 2012 (UTC)
Jesuit, New Orleans vs Holy Cross, New Orleans
[edit]Quote from Holy Cross' Wikipedia entry: (http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Holy_Cross_School_(New_Orleans))
Holy Cross football vs. Jesuit won the 2011 meeting 37-0, but Holy Cross won the 2013 meeting with a miraculous victory of 16-13.
