Misleading page title
[edit]The title says that these are all Dark Horse Comics properties, but many of the films listed are based on material that is not property of Dark Horse Comics. Dark Horse does not own Sin City, 300, Hellboy. Saying that they are based on Dark Horse Comics publications would be more appropriate. --Nat Gertler (talk) 02:20, 22 August 2012 (UTC)
Tarzan
[edit]The Tarzan listing shows the problem with the vagueness of this article. Tarzan is not a Dark Horse property, not something they own. It's not something they're publishing at this point, it seems; they are just one past publisher of the character. DHE does have some sort of fingers in the production of the movie. So is this a list of "any film we can link to the Dark Horse company?" --Nat Gertler (talk) 05:13, 24 August 2014 (UTC)
About to delete titles
[edit]Okay, I'm getting ready to delete the following titles from this list because they are not based on Dark Horse publications:
- The Rocketeer - Dark Horse did not publish any Rocketeer until after the movie
- Monarch of the Moon does not appear to be based on any publication
- Splinter does not appear to be based on any publication
- Driftwood does not appear to be based on any publication
- Pathfinder was a comic based on a film, not the other way 'round.
- 30 Days Of Night has never been published by Dark Horse (applies to all sequels as well)
- My Name is Bruce is a comic based on a movie, not the other way around
- The Conan films are based on the novels of Robert E. Howard, and not on the Dark Horse publications
- The Tarzan movie is based on the stories of Edgar Rice Burroughs; Dark Horse is just one of many publishers to do derivative work based on it, and isn't even the current comics licensee.
If you have any specific disagreements with this analysis, please voice it now. --Nat Gertler (talk) 03:55, 3 November 2014 (UTC)
- Also, Dr. Giggles comic was based on the film, not the other way around. --Nat Gertler (talk) 01:15, 4 November 2014 (UTC)
Problem with new title
[edit]While I appreciate the intent in moving the page to "List of films based on Dark Horse Comics", the capitalization of "Comics" it makes it part of the Dark Horse pronoun, so either it's films based on the company, or films based on the one specific series they did, Dark Horse Comics. The page should be moved so that the c is lower case. However, at the moment I'm going to avoid doing it myself, both because multiple moves in a short time suggest a discussion is needed, and because there was some odd fallout of the previous move (one page was left as a redirect to itself.) --Nat Gertler (talk) 05:29, 14 December 2017 (UTC)
Publications versus properties
[edit]As I've said earlier on this talk page, many of the movies being discussed are based on works published by Dark Horse, but they are not Dark Horse properties. Dark Horse does not own the copyright to Sin City, 300, Hellboy, and others. So if we reword the intro to limit it to properties, we are going to have to gut a large amount of the chart. --Nat Gertler (talk) 00:10, 18 June 2019 (UTC)
My Name is Bruce and Dr. Giggles
[edit]I just deleted entries for both My Name is Bruce and Dr. Giggles, because while the Dark Horse company was involved in these films, they were not based on comic books. They were original movies... which then had a tie-in comic book done of the movie. The credits for the My Name is Bruce comic book note that its script was based on the original screenplay for the film. The Dr. Giggles comic book was released in October 1992, the same month as the film, as a tie-in product, and does not predate the making of the film. (And before someone suggests redefining the list to include these, let me note that any likely change would mean a large change in the list. If it's "films where Dark Horse was involved in production", you lose Sin City, 300, and more; if its's "films of properties for which Dark Horse published a comic book", you're adding all the Star Wars movies, the Godzilla movies, even Big.) --Nat Gertler (talk) 13:57, 1 July 2019 (UTC)
- If anyone needs any more evidence, in this thread you will find the writer of the comic book specifically denying being the creator of Dr. Giggles. So I'm undoing the latest addition of that material to this page. --Nat Gertler (talk) 19:47, 2 July 2019 (UTC)
I am thinking Mystery Men is the same case as these two. There was only a 2 issue movie adaptation published. Shouldn't it be removed also? 05:06, 2 April 2020 (UTC)Goldeneyed (talk)
Production houses versus distributors
[edit]In the "box office" chart, there is a column marked "distributors". Deathstroke5122 (talk · contribs) has been adding additional production houses to the list... but a production house is different from a distributor. Films generally do not have multiple domestic distributors. --Nat Gertler (talk) 13:21, 5 July 2019 (UTC)
List of television series based on Dark Horse Comics & List of films based on Dark Horse Comics Merger
[edit]Image comics, Archie comics, and Harvey comics all have one combined wiki page for television series and films. I believe it would be best to merge the two pages for Dark Horse Comics as well. --Goldeneyed (talk) 14:31, 22 September 2019 (UTC)
- Fine by me --Nat Gertler (talk) 14:54, 22 September 2019 (UTC)
Are you able to do the merger? I am scared of screwing something up. I believe the best way is to merge the television series page into the films page.--Goldeneyed (talk) 20:21, 23 September 2019 (UTC)
