What counts as an honor or award?

[edit]

Some of these things are not honors or awards.

A Pulitzer Prize nomination is not an award--a Pulitzer Prize is an award. Likewise for the Tony. One may be honored to be nominated, but the honor is the prize, not the nomination.

Distinguished Visiting Professor, Wichita State University, is a job, not an honor or award, even though it has "Distinguished" in the title. Likewise, "Member, American Revolution Bicentennial Council" is a membership in a council, as much as she may have felt honored to be appointed by President Ford. Ditto for "Member, Presidential Commission for International Women's Year, appointed by Jimmy Carter." Again for "Member, North Carolina Arts Council." Again for "Board of Governors, Winston-Salem State University."

"Reynold's Professor of American Studies, Wake Forest University (lifetime appointment), 1981," is misspelled (no apostrophe in "Reynold's," please"), and is not an award--it's a professorship. Likewise for "W.K. Kellogg Foundation, Expert-in-Residence Program" (I assume she was the expert-in-residence). Same with "American Ambassador, UNICEF"--it's an appointment, not an award or an honor.

"Inaugural Poet, 1993," may have felt like an honor or an award, but it wasn't--and who called it "Inaugural Poet"? The word "inaugural" means "first." It should be "inauguration poet," in my opionion. Same with "Special Olympics World Games, Speaker"--being asked to speak may feel like an honor, but it's not an honor in this sense, it's being asked to speak.

"New York Times Best Seller List, May 2006," is not an honor or award presented by the New York Times--it's a statistical reflection of book sales.

Thanks for the input. However, in the future, please remember to sign your posts on talk pages; it'd give you more credibility. I noticed that you posted from an anonymous IP address; I suggest that you log in.
This is a general sort of list, I suppose. What's listed here are not strictly "awards" or "honors"; they're the myriad of ways in which Dr. Angelou has been honored throughout her long life and career. If you have a suggestion about how this list can be more specific and accurate, knock yourself out and make the changes. If you think the title of this article is misleading, go through the process of having it re-named. In other words, be bold.--Figureskatingfan (talk) 02:18, 20 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Upright image

[edit]

The images in this article have given so many editors the fits! And that's even after it was passed to FL. For the future, the version as of today [1], I as this list's main editor, prefer. I suggest that this, created by User:Another Believer, serve as a reference in case its current integrity is lost. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 15:16, 29 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Dang! I like your indicated version better on the screen I'm using right now (which is 1024 pixels wide) but there is no way to prevent the top image from interfering with the list width except by adding a Template:Clear left. If someone uses a really wide screen then the top image will otherwise dip down into the awards list. Binksternet (talk) 16:29, 29 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Honorary degrees from Northeastern University

[edit]

Hi. The current version of this article cites two honorary degrees from Northeastern University, one in 1982 and one in 1992. This appears to be true, but the cite/site used (<http://library.northeastern.edu/archives-special-collections/find-collections/northeastern-history/commencement-speakers-honorary>) does not mention the 1982 degree. --MZMcBride (talk) 00:36, 4 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I checked, and found that you're correct, so I fixed the error. I'm pretty sure what happened is that Dr. Angelou received an honorary degree from Northeastern in 1982, and from Northwestern in 1993. The NW degree wasn't able to be verified, so it was removed, but not before I got the two confused. Thanks for the catch. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 04:03, 4 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Real degrees?

[edit]

So, to be clear, she never actually earned a degree--correct? She had no actual education behind her many doctoral degrees?

That's. why. they're. called. "honorary". Sigh. Oh, and please sign your posts. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 21:09, 29 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

That sort of condescension must get you lots of friends in the real world, if you ever go there. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 138.163.106.71 (talk) 17:53, 11 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Heh, aren't you witty. You, dear anonymous IP, obviously were not raised well, since both comments demonstrate that you do not respect your elders. Go away. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 22:13, 11 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
