Too much untranslated Japanese

[edit]

I see a very large number of entries in this list that look like this:

36. 身も心も軽く!?の巻
37. スイカはいらんかね!?の巻
38. 富豪巡査・中川の巻

In fact, it looks like there are over 1,300 titles given in untranslated Japanese only.

This is the English Wikipedia, and we can't assume that users here can read Japanese, even in a manga-related article. I would like to know if the Japanese entries are going to be translated, and if not, do they need to be here at all? --Metropolitan90 (talk) 23:51, 12 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, they need to be here. However, there's a lot of material to be romanized and translated (as you said, over 1300 titles), so that's going to be a deterrent for a lot of editors who would otherwise be able to offer such translations. The list needs some cleanup and then it needs to be split, then maybe we can get some translators in to do their thing. ダイノガイ?!」(Dinoguy1000) 19:13, 13 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
As Dino says -- they do need to be here. Per policy, things don't have to be perfect, and there's no timeline for getting there. Splitting the task into manageable (and less daunting) chunks would probably help, yes. Speaking of which ... —Quasirandom (talk) 21:51, 6 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
(Another cleanup thing: the volume references need to be moved from the ISBN (which through the magic of the autolinking are self-referencing) to the date of publication. —Quasirandom (talk) 22:04, 6 August 2009 (UTC))[reply]
Um, the ... no Maki (...の巻) at the end of each and every chapter title? Doesn't that just mean "Volume of ... "? Kinda like saying "chapter" every single time. I note that it's not translated in any of the English chapter titles already given. —Quasirandom (talk) 22:13, 6 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
(And as a very minor point, per ja.wiki, chapter 1600 has been published. So updates are needed throughout. —Quasirandom (talk) 22:14, 6 August 2009 (UTC))[reply]
* As far as I see, in this english wikipedia, language should be in english. The titles ought the be either translated or simly deleted (which then means the article becomes pointless, since there is no list then). The original japanese (?) title could still be available together with the translation. Pink Python (talk) 16:03, 31 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed, but I also note that there is no timeline, not when we're dealing with volunteer editors. —Quasirandom (talk) 16:43, 31 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Tag

[edit]

I took the liberty of removing the Non-English tag. This is a known issue on the projects to do list, and the scope of the project makes the two week time limit the tag allows unreasonable. It will get done eventually, I'm sure. But actually translating it would also involve splitting it into several subpages -- with a page of this length, the tags would stop working, as they did on the Jojo's chapter list. It's a more involved project that needs editors with the time and resources to commit to it, and there doesn't need to be a time limit to find someone like that, for reasons Quasirandom already explained above. Split?

[edit]

Is there any reason for the split tag? If there is, what excactly is it that the article is proposed to be split into? Pink Python (talk) 16:02, 31 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I can't speak for the editor who placed the tag, but I suspect it's into multiple chunks, per precedent for other long series, such as television shows and (for another manga series), Naruto. If perchance this list ever reached the quality needed to otherwise become a features list, the FLC reviews would immediately bounce it for being too long, and since they are the guidance on best practices, their opinion rules. —Quasirandom (talk) 16:42, 31 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, and as Doceirias reminds us above, which I had forgotten, is that a page with 1600 {{Nihongo}} templates, even if they weren't inside the templates formatting the lists, will break the page -- the underlying software that runs this site cannot handle that many. So there's not just a guideline reason but a programmatic reason to split it into sublists. —Quasirandom (talk) 04:12, 1 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I was the one who originally placed the split tag on here. When this is split, it should be split along the same lines as the sections it is currently divided into, for the reasons Quasi and Doceirias have already pointed out. ダイノガイ千?!? · Talk⇒Dinoguy1000 20:51, 1 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Big change

[edit]

I just removed all the chapter titles for the first volumes, will do the rest provided this doesn't get reverted. Heres my rationale, firstly, a list of chapters of a volume? This is an excessive amount of detail, especially when there are over a thousand, and doesn't really go well with WP:NOTDIR. Secondly, 90% or more of them are in Japanese, and have been for a long time, and there is little indication they will be translated, over at WP:PNT nobody seems to have any interest in doing so any time soon. Finally, even if they are translated, they are all names, which never translate well, e.g. one was "Tokyo's Famous Great Edo Land". So therefore I think the best option is to move the article to "List of Kochira Katsushika-ku Kameari Kōen-mae Hashutsujo Volumes", as you can see the section I've already done is much tidier and overall better looking--Jac16888Talk 18:08, 3 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please see the FL-level List of Naruto chapters (Part I), List of Claymore chapters, or List of Yotsuba&! chapters for just three examples of what these lists can be. There is no deadline, and WP:ANIME has several in-house translators who have already been asked (within the past few days) to do some work on translating these chapter titles. I have no comment on translateability, but I also don't see it as a convincing argument to remove the titles. If you wish to rename and refocus this list, you'd be better off asking for comments at WT:ANIME first, since this could potentially affect many other chapter lists as well. Needless to say, I have reverted your removal for now. ダイノガイ千?!? · Talk⇒Dinoguy1000 18:33, 3 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
What Dinoguy said, with two additional point: First, regarding the "little indication they will be translated", in the past few days, some titles have in fact been translated -- in other words, the work is in fact ongoing. Second, as a work of serial fiction, it was published a chapters in a magazine, and later collected in volumes; as such, chapters are the original publication format. (We group them in volumes more or less for convenience, which is more or less why publishers do as well.) —Quasirandom (talk) 20:23, 3 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
