Klay World

This is a very large Internet series, like Neroticaly Yours. Itshould have its own article. It is posted on mainly 2 websites. They are Newgrounds, and KnoxsKorner. It made by Robert Leon Benfer, who goes by the name Knox. It has become very successful, it even has its own movie, which is listed in the article List of stop-motion films. It was going to have its own article, but was chosen not to be one. There is possibly going to be a sequel to the movie, and a different one called "Lakeside Ghost".

"Shorter FOO"

The internet tradition which launched the phrase "I am aware of all internet traditions" was "Shorter FOO"--e.g., "Shorter Ann Coulter", "Shorter George Bush"--in which a longer statement by FOO is linked and summarized in a clever, extremely unflattering, though preferably not completely unfair, way.

But does it make sense to list this type of stylized discourse here? Does this risk turning this page into a glossary, or worse a list of catchphrases ("fisk", "and a pony", "Friedman Unit"), or, worst, of bad rhetorical habits ("Barry HUSSEIN OSAMA")?

CARMEN WINSTEAD

there is a popular urban ledgend of a girl named carmen winstead that originated from myspace and later spread into chain e-mails and texts. the story is something along the lines of this:

There is a girl named carmen who during a fire drill is pushed down a sewer by a group of 'popular' girls trying to embarass her. when she didnt resurface the girls called the police. the police fished carmens body from the sewer finding that she had broken her neck on the ladder. the girls told everyone that she fell, they belived them. later on a 16 yr old boy got a text telling this story and decided not to repost it. later when the boy was taking a shower he heard a girl laughing and rushed to repost the message. but it was too late. that night, the boys mother ran to his room after hearing strange noises and didnt find him in his bed. months later, police found the boy in a sewer with a broken neck and the flesh peeled from his face.

the chain e-mail and text claims that if you do not send the story to everyone on your list, carmen will come after you. the e-mail claims that you can even google her name and find that the story is true, which is probably what you are doing right now. although, after a bit of research it was discovered that no news of any stories even remotely similar to the one told above have been found in any news stations or papers and that there have been no reports of any dead teenagers found in the sewer ever. so whatever they are telling you in the chain letters or my space posts should be marked as junk as it is just a waste of time and probably an escuse for teenage girls to make more freinds on their myspace. dont beleive what theyre telling you in these fake posts.

A note to these IP editors: please be sure to use proper Wiki syntax, such as creating a new header for each topic post, and to sign your posts. Oh, and for the above, non-notable and unverifiable. -- 李博杰  | Talk contribs email 05:13, 6 July 2009 (UTC)

More memes can be added

There are many things that can be added here:

omnomnomnom.com [1]

demotivational posters (this one is a big meme), many of which come from despair.com [2], but people may often make their own using a motivational poster maker [3]

"i think halo is a pretty cool guy. eh kills aliens and doesn't afraid of anything" was most likely first posted by Anonymous on 4chan, according to the encyclopedia dramatica. here is a picture [4]

interior crocodile aligator [5] [6] [7]. less well known, but the audio is from part of a rap by Chip Tha Ripper

shoop da woop [8] (do we know if it's spelled "woop" or "whoop"?) this meme really must be added on the list, as it's one of the classic memes. its origin is probably from 4chan, and here is a possible explanation from a blogger [9]

the lolwut pear [10]

the Youtube video "Message to Scientology", by Church0fScientology [11], in which Anonymous uses a synth voice in a video to announce its decision to destroy Scientology "For the good of your followers, for the good of mankind, and for our own enjoyment"

Youtube poop is a meme, but i wouldn't know where to site it.

"This is SPARTA!!" [12] a quote from the movie "300," which inspired thousands of facebook users to join a group called “Everyone write ‘This is Sparta!’ on your AP tests.”

Rant about pleading and begging on this talk page

To all prospective editors: Wikipedia is WP:NOT an infinite repository of information; we cannot mention every single puff piece on the internet as there are obvious limitations and restrictions, and thus are against WP policy. Memes must be proven of WP:NOTABILITY, using WP:RELIABLE SOURCES that are WP:VERIFIABLE. Adding a request, plead or begging here will not have any change on the article; you must be able to prove notability if you intend on making a contribution to this specific article. Remember, the WP:BURDEN of finding sources is on you, as the contributor, not on me, or any other editor. We are not your slaves, nor are we paid for this, we all have lives, wives, girlfriends and university degrees to tend to, and so do not have the willpower to assist in finding sources for internet memes. Contributors are required to find credible sources on your own. Also, new additions to this talk page must be placed at the bottom, and you must remember to WP:SIGN your posts. Note also that WP:PEACOCK terms and WP:WEASEL words in your "plead" do not make them appear "more important", rather it makes them all the more less credible; be sure to only mention facts, as Wikipedia is built on facts. A red paperclip

Here I added the red paperclip story into the article, but it got removed allegedly based on it not being a meme. This article is about "Internet phenomena". The guy got a Guinness world record by doing internet transactions and got covered by countless blogs, websites and mainstream media. How is he not an internet phenomenon? --uKER (talk) 13:39, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

BTW, I'd say 90% of the items listed under "Websites" are more questionable than this one. Also, Brokeback Mountain an internet phenomenon? What gives? --uKER (talk) 13:49, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

The idea of these internet phenomena are that they not only spread widely but then become memes on which other user-created content is built on. There's no question that One Red Paperclip was noteworthy and needs an article of its own, but it's not something that had the same viral nature as other things on this list. That said, there are probably a few other things on this list that need pruning. --MASEM (t) 14:02, 21 July 2009 (UTC)
If that is the case, maybe we should clarify the criterion by which something becomes worth listing here and do the cleanup to establish the idea. --uKER (talk) 14:09, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

Japanese Internet memes

Some of these are popping up a lot around YouTube and Nico Nico Douga, which can lead viewers to lesser-known ones and could gain more attention to people outside of Japan. Should this list include a section about several Japanese Internet memes like these below?

  • Hatsune Miku (初音ミク, lit. "Voice of the Future") - a vocaloid by Yamaha widely used on Nico Nico Douga and YouTube. Often used in saying "La" at every note of an instrumental song (most notably video game music), as well as vocal songs, whether original or not.
  • Yaranaika (やらないか, lit. "Shall we do it?") - a one-shot homoerotic manga by Junichi Yamakawa (山川純一) first published in a manga supplement of the gay magazine Barazoku in 1987. The short manga is a famous meme on the internet (Japanese internet forums especially), largely considered the representative work of Yamakawa and responsible for the revived popularity in his works.Source
  • Hikkoshi Baba (騒音おばさん, lit. "Noise Aunt") - a woman who makes a lot of loud noise with a lot of things. From yelling while using a carpet beater to playing loud music with a boombox.
  • Yukkuris (ゆっくり, lit. "Slow" or "Easy") - Click here for more info.
  • [MAD] - a series of music videos similar to YouTube Poop, but with several words and sounds from different videos played at every beat of a song. Here are some examples:
    • Shuzo Matsuoka (松岡修造) - a series of [MAD] music videos showing a former tennis player advertising a deodorant while shouting "Shu!". Sometimes he tells viewers to never give up while complaining a lot.
    • Ichiro Laser Beam - a series of [MAD] music videos showing Ichiro Suzuki, a Major League Baseball outfielder for the Seattle Mariners, throwing a baseball as a mass-exploding laser beam.
    • Ronald McDonald Insanity - a series of [MAD] music videos showing the Japanese McDonald's commercials cut and remixed. The first one noticed by English-speaking regions.
    • Airmoto (エア本さん / 必須アモト酸) - a series of [MAD] music videos showing a famous Japanese actress and a member of a Japanese cult religious sorority from Nico Nico Douga.

There are several others out there, but I don't know their names. Parrothead1983 (talk) 00:02, 20 July 2009 (UTC)

Unless there's sufficient information in English to discuss them, they should not be here - this is en.wiki. --MASEM (t) 02:14, 20 July 2009 (UTC)

What What (In the Butt)

Seems like the What What (In the Butt) video should be added to the "videos" section of this article. It was a hugely popular viral video and created a fan following. It's listed on YouTube as being one of the Most Discussed videos of all time, it currently has around 23 million downloads, it has received a ton of press, and it was even featured on an episode of South Park where the plot of the episode revolved around notworthy/famous viral videos. There are a bunch of reliable sources that call the video a "sensation", "a perfectly executed viral conspiracy", "a smash hit that circulated around the world via the internet", etc.. Can someone get it listed? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.229.214.55 (talk) 23:03, 23 July 2009 (UTC)

Wikipedia?

Does Wikipedia count as an internet meme (such as CITATION NEEDED quotes)? It is almost always referenced in pop culture; such as 9000! anonymous wikis across the web. Plus I think Wikipedia is pretty notable, if not... Anyway I'm not reffering to the wiki itself as an internet meme, more as an internet phenomenon. TY Kausill 10:59, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

wikipedia is not a word for all wikis. saying wikipedia is an internet phenomenon seems a bit dubious. it is not a source of internet memes but does have an internet culture of it's own. if including wikipedia creates a slippery slope then it might be best to remove it. encyclopedia dramatica would be a better candidate. Some thing (talk) 18:43, 1 August 2009 (UTC)

I'm pretty sure that several news sources have identified Charlie as a viral video. In fact, I think it's a lot more popular than stuff like Tyson. I think WP:IAR applies here. Kausill 13:52, 22 July 2009 (UTC)
I think you have misinterpreted WP:IAR in regards to this situation; WP:RS still applies here. If it has been proven that it is viral, then WP:N is justified. That only leaves WP:RS that is WP:V (i.e. not a "blogspot" post; rather, an article by a more established source, perhaps Slashdot, Cnet, New York Times, etc), which shouldn't be hard to fulfil. Someone should be WP:BOLD in searching for sources. -- 李博杰  | Talk contribs email 13:57, 22 July 2009 (UTC)

Angry german kid

Angry german kid (aka leopold) was filmed by his dad while playing a computer game however when the game dosen't lean in his favorso he chucks a spaz and smashes his keyboard. Some people say that it was staged and was to show what graphic video games can do to people. In return users have made edited videos of angry german kid like "angry german kid gets mauled by the smurfs" or "angry german kid has a nightmare". after leopold's dad gave the video to a local news company they showed it on air and people started to think he was undergoing therapy. Because of the misunderstanding leopold stoped making videos for a year. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.182.137.130 (talk) 18:45, 8 September 2009 (UTC)

Reference to verify notability as a meme? -- 李博杰  | Talk contribs email 06:06, 20 September 2009 (UTC)

So what exactly is the point of the page?

It seems like internet phenomena that become big enough for reputable sources to take note would present a poor sampling of the overall body and content of memes in general. However, in light of notability, sourcing, and other wikipedia conventions, total inclusiveness is totally infeasible. So just what is this page trying to accomplish? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.145.129.47 (talk) 01:59, 31 August 2009 (UTC)

This list is not aimed at being an exhaustive list of memes (which would be impossible), just a mention of a number which are notable enough to have sources written about them. -- 李博杰  | Talk contribs email 08:16, 31 August 2009 (UTC)
We are documenting memes and other phenomena that have gained notice outside of the internet - mainstream media for example. Sure we could use something like KnowYourMeme.com as a source, but that still considered a source within the bounds of the internet. The problem with that is that such memes can propagate themselves due to the viral nature of the internet, but many of these blossom and fade with not a blip on the radar outside of it. We're looking for things like national newspapers, mainstream television coverage, and the like, to tell us when the meme has at least surfaced, if not stayed afloat, of what the rest of the world sees from the internet subculture. That is what makes these memes notable is their recognition from non-Internet-related sources. --MASEM (t) 15:17, 31 August 2009 (UTC)
Just like internet porn, if it is only online it won't make it on Wikipedia. I would like to see more people looking for RS so maybe instead of "see the FAQ which is worded like you are a damn moron" there should be something copy and pasted in like "hey, go find some sources from a google news search than try again" or maybe even trying it yourself, Benlisquare. I'm sure it is annoying playing gate keeper but if you are going to put yourself in the way of trolls you might as well do it right or stop trying. Realistically, you might as well just sit back and revert instead of spending your time essentially telling people to go away since it accomplishes the same thing. That's criticism from just looking at the talk page so my criticism (which I promise is meant to be constructive) might be off.
Further more, please keep in mind that notability requirements do not limit the content of articles (WP:N#NCONTENT) so the sourcing guidelines for verifiability are not nearly as stringent as might be currently asked for. There is no reason we can't have more unwikilinked subjects in this list as long as an eye is kept out for bloat and recentism. We might as well delete the whole thing if the focus is not to let Wikipedia turn into an indiscriminate collection of information. A category could easily take its place.Cptnono (talk) 11:15, 23 September 2009 (UTC)

Bot archiving of talk page

Interval should be changed to every 3 or 4 months... a monthly archive to a new page is very inefficient, e.g. July 2009 is only 30,327 bytes while June 2009 is only 2,859 bytes. Taking into account that talk page traffic varies from time to time, 3 or 4 months should be enough to reduce the disparity between archive pages and reduce the unnecessary number of archive pages we have for this talk page. Consider archives for pages like Barack Obama and they run up to the hundreds of KBs, example being Talk:Barack Obama/Archive 58 at 154,621 bytes. -- 李博杰  | Talk contribs email 13:45, 9 October 2009 (UTC)

There are countries where forums are more important than YouTube, Facebook and MySpace. 78.130.136.199 (talk) 14:43, 3 December 2009 (UTC)
Do you have any specific examples with reiable sources to back them up

Charlie Bit My Finger

Is there an article on Wikipedia about this video? I'm interested in creating one. Theleftorium 17:04, 20 November 2009 (UTC)

Jpmcruiser (talk) 21:00, 21 December 2009 (UTC) It already has an article.

Organization and Cleanup

As it stands right now, the sections are misleading and unorganized. Phenomena should be listed alphabetically and in the section most appropriate. For example, a picture that has become a meme should be listed under "Images," yet the person featured in it (whose name is not known) is listed under "People", even though the image itself is what's important. That's currently the case with one entry, and I'm planning on fixing that and doing some overall cleanup of various sections. If anyone wants to weigh in or help out I'd appreciate it. Friginator (talk) 00:15, 2 December 2009 (UTC)

Also, the "Websites" section should be removed, in my opinion. Many of the memes/phenomena are websites to begin with, and I can't imagine a way to properly source any particular website for inclusion, as the list is essentially "websites that are important on the internet". The whole thing seems redundant to me, so I'm going to go ahead and remove it. However, a list of hoax/satirical websites (Flying Spaghetti Monster, Bert is Evil, Bonsai Kitten, etc.), might be worth including with proper citations. Friginator (talk) 02:36, 2 December 2009 (UTC)

There is a difference between websites that propigate memes (4chan) and websites that are memes (not just one single page or character, but the entirity of stuff there) like Homestar Runner or Weebls. Unless we can figure a better way to classify those later parts, which I'm not against. But there are meme websites, and there is some listed that should be removed. --MASEM (t) 02:47, 2 December 2009 (UTC)
In that case, I don't think we should include websites simply because they create memes. Like I said, a list of gag sites like the Flying Spaghetti Monster would be fine. But right now the article lists sites like Facebook and Twitter, neither of which even have anything to do with memes. The section is basically a list of popular websites. Weebls and Homestar Runner wouldn't count because they both include a large, varied amount of content, rather than one central video, game, image, joke, theme, etc. An individual part of one of those websites could be a meme, but when the website is more than one particular example of a meme, it can't be a meme itself. For example, YouTube is not a meme, but various videos on YouTube are. Friginator (talk) 03:29, 2 December 2009 (UTC)
I agree. All of the websites mentioned in that section have easily verifiable popularity, but I think it's inaccurate to describe the websites as "Internet phenomena" per se. I'm of the understanding that "List of Internet Phenomena" can be translated in Wiki-terms to "List of Internet-based memes which have been described as "phenomenons" or similar by one or more reliable sources." OhNoitsJamie Talk 04:26, 2 December 2009 (UTC)

Honestly, I don't see too much of a problem with this. then again, thats my opinion. if necessary, though, i agree in that things like facebook and twitter should be removed first. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jpmcruiser (talkcontribs) 03:41, 17 December 2009 (UTC)

Regarding the talk on Facebook, note that the title of the article is not List of Internet memes, but rather List of Internet phenomena. The definition of "phenomena" is not synonymous with "meme". The "meme list" argument does not suffice. -- 李博杰  | Talk contribs email 12:08, 21 December 2009 (UTC)

The article Star Wars Kid asks for his name not to be included. I believe, that this should be adhered to. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Thompson.matthew (talkcontribs) 09:51, 21 December 2009 (UTC)

Wikipedia is not censored, and intentionally covering up someone's real name when it's public knowledge is blatantly against policy. Per WP:BLP, as the person was a minor when the event happened, and has since asked to keep his name out of it, we cannot assign the name unless they allow for us to do so, both here and at Star Wars Kid. --MASEM (t) 04:48, 22 December 2009 (UTC)

Boxxy

I have recently been looking up boxxy on the net. Just seeing what happened.. She was happy on the net one day and then 3 weeks later there came up a video of her. From her class and she tryed not to pay attention to the camera. Then when her class mate videoed her the second time she said some lyrics to song and they pointed the camera to the other class mates. Personally i think it was a encoded message. Meaning she had to go underground.. but she still loves you. Boxxy was no where near anonymous. Long story short unless you guys want to read up on it. Boxxy released 3 videos on youtube for her gai online friends. People on a image hosting site called 4chan posted her photos on there massively, in hordes. Because she was a funny teenager. Boxxy was a hyper teenager who just innocently posted 3 videos without knowing how it would spark up. Well CBCR ( A anti boxxy group) Went into deep investigation on her to find out her real life details. Well..They did. Over the course of a week they found her phone number, address, Every account since 2005. They had cracked into it by using the lost password feature. There were reports of a man who did try to kill her, And many reports that she was under police protection. Google maps on her address showed that she had police cars by her house. There was a boxxy meet at her house and a video of it and several pictures. There was a blond lady who asked them to go away and that there aware of whats happening. Every picture of boxxy has been exposed on to the internet. And people even claiming her router name was "Hogwarts" According to rumor she was forced to move because of all the stalkers and flowers at her house. Along with people sitting there staring. This is a example of how dangerous the internet is. This was ridicules and showed how many pedos and hateful people are on the net. No law action was ever taken to my knowledge. But somebody needs to add in here somewhere that there was some other info as well.. Far from anonymous. Thanks. And btw im 16 and i just look up history on various people. I have always done it ;D i even know info that nobody else knows. Keeping to myself. Im not asking for her Information to be posted, Im asking for somebody to add in that she was stalked, tracked down and nearly hurt. But then again, This is your call.--Suffx (talk) 00:07, 25 December 2009 (UTC)

mudkipz

Before I start some sort of edit war over this (having just come here from Lamest), I just want to make sure I understand something. "so i herd u leik mudkipz" is listed here as being an animation-inspired meme. However, I would like to present to my fellow editors the idea that the mudkipz meme should be listed as a gaming meme, along the lines of the "LET ME SHOW YOU MY POKEYMANS" lolcat, as mudkips, as well as all other Pokemon, originate from a series of video games rather than some sort of animation. If the original line that the anon from 4chan was, in fact, referring to the animated works of the franchise, then the point is moot (pardon the pun). If it is not, however, a reference to the animated works of the franchise, then I propose moving the mudkipz entry from animation to gaming. If there are any objectors, please speak now so that an edit war may be avoided. Raekuul, bringer of Tropes (He does it without notability) 02:06, 6 January 2010 (UTC)

According to the relevant articles, Mudkip premiered in Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire, which came out in 2002. The anime, on the other hand, started in 1997. Thus, the mere fact that the original video game came before the anime is no help when trying to figure out whether the Mudkipz meme is based on the game or on the anime. Powers T 02:37, 6 January 2010 (UTC)
Except that the season of anime that Mudkip premiered in was, if I'm not mistaken, also the Ruby and Sapphire series, which means that Mudkip would not have debuted until November of 2002 at the very earliest (excluding an Early Bird Cameo in the Silver League finale), according to the list of Pokemon: Advanced episodes. Also, the List of Pokemon 241-260 page links to the mudkipz meme as a games phenomenon, not an animation phenom. We probably should be internally consistent.
