ANC support for Constitutional inclusion?

[edit]

I apologise if this is just ignorance on my part (and, granted, this isn't exactly an area I'm much knowledgeable about) but I'm not aware of the ANC having supported same-sex marriage during the early 1990s. Is this a mistake or...? Also, the party is not unmixed on the issue of homosexuals - what about now-President Zuma's previous statements, as just one example? There is bias here. I'm going to attempt to balance the slightly pro-ANC information in the article. Does anyone object? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Rechtstaat (talkcontribs) 18:11, 14 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The "Post-Apartheid" section gives far too much (unsourced) credit to the ANC when in fact actual opposition to LGBT rights in Parliament and during the CODESSA period only came from a few small conservative parties. In fact the official opposition Democratic Alliance has been consistently (and persistently) supportive of LGBT rights to a much greater extent than any of the "liberation-oriented" parties, including the ANC. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 12:32, 24 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The Bill of Rights - 1993 - included an anti-discrimination clause on the basis of sexual orientation. The Preliminary Revised Text, or the Draft Bill of Rights prepared by the Constitutional Committee of the ANC, includes these protections under Article 8. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 132.206.33.162 (talk) 20:20, 2 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

But it doesn't say anything about same-sex marriage. We can fairly say that the ANC supported a prohibition on discrimination. Without some more we can't say that the ANC expressly supported SSM. - htonl (talk) 20:37, 2 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
And if we mention the ANC we should also mention that the DP and IFP proposals included similar explicit anti-discrimination clauses (source). - htonl (talk) 20:45, 2 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Same sex marriage was only legalised after a ruling by the constitutional court forced the government to change the law, in a case in which the government lawyers actually argued against legalisation. The ANC's support for non-discrimination stopped short of full marital equality, until they were forced by the ConCourt ruling. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 20:49, 2 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Well exactly. I don't want to edit the article myself because of my declared conflict of interest in the area of party politics. But I propose that section should read something like:

During the negotiations to end apartheid in the early 1990s, several parties proposed draft Bills of Rights to be included in a new constitution. The drafts produced by the African National Congress, the Democratic Party and the Inkatha Freedom Party all included provisions explicitly prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. The draft proposed by the National Party did not explicitly mention sexual orientation but prohibited discrimination on the basis of "natural characteristics".[1] The Interim Constitution which came into force in 1994 explicitly included sexual orientation in its anti-discrimination provision. This provision was kept in the final constitution, approved in 1996, due to the lobbying efforts of LGBT South Africans organised in the National Coalition for Gay and Lesbian Equality. As a result, South Africa became [... continues unchanged]

Thoughts? - htonl (talk) 22:36, 2 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Works for me, though my conflict of interest is fairly similar to yours. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 06:34, 6 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Threat to gay rights in South Africa

[edit]

Just saw an article about a possible threat to gay rights in South Africa

http://constitutionallyspeaking.co.za/affirming-their-own-moral-inferiority/

Basically the constitutional review committee has allowed a clause in the constitution, which bars discrimination based on sexual identity, to be put up for debate. Perhaps this should be added to the article? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Geqo (talkcontribs) 12:44, 10 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Possibly, although it could be recentism. If we do add it, we should also include a mention of the statement from the ANC that they were not considering putting it up for debate. (ANC distances itself from gay comments.) - htonl (talk) 14:08, 10 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sources

[edit]

Hello, I've just marked a number of sources as dead links. Please help retrieve current URLs for the same, or they may get removed, together with the unsourced contents. I also notice that many references do not really pass the reliability test, what with blogs, dubious use of external commercial sites for listings, etc. Finally, please format references properly, ideally using templates such as {{cite web}} and {{cite news}}. In particular, quoting the original title is very helpful in preventing link rot. Thanks. 123.198.187.68 (talk) 02:56, 28 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Changes needed

I'm copying this from the Help Desk, where it was posted by GR101:

Wrapped Magazine no longer exists. Exit Newspaper, www.exit.co.za should be listed and Gay Pages www.gaypages.co.za should be listed. These are both long standing national publications in South Africa. — Preceding unsigned comment added by GR101 (talkcontribs) 09:54, 13 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Blood donation issue

[edit]

The section about the blood donation prohibition is just too conveniently silent about the context. South Africa at that time had the highest HIV/AIDS rate in the entire world, also a time when treatment was not as effective as now - it was not then a "live with it" chronic disease. Parts of this article are not neutral, it tends towards a RGW tone. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 17:34, 6 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

RGW? - htonl (talk) 18:04, 6 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Htonl "Right Great Wrongs" - the tone of the article in some parts leans a bit towards activism. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 09:43, 7 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
