As is noted in the article the Su15 fighter reportedly did not carry tracer rounds for its cannons. So it's unlikely the pilots of KAL 007 knew they were fired upon. The cockpit voice recorder gave no indication the pilots saw the shots, or knew they were in danger until the 2 missiles launched by the Su15 hit the plane.
