Birth Place
[edit]Her biography on the French National Assembly website and Le monde say that she was born in Algeria. There is no mention of "French Algeria", "occupied Algeria", "colonised Algeria" or any other unofficial expression. Yet, Number 57 reckons, without giving a valid reason, that we should ignore Wikipedia's core sourcing policy - WP:VERIFY and stick to his WP:OR version. St-Sébas (talk) 13:08, 10 October 2015 (UTC)
- "Algeria" was the name in use at the time (before 1962) for this part of France. Then when it became an independant country, not a part of France anymore, it kept the same name, "Algeria". The "French Algeria" mention is a useful and encyclopedic information that I think we should keep. It is just fact, it is encyclopedically neutral fact. Perhaps we could let appear the only word "Algeria", but make it a link to the article French Algeria? (Like this: Algeria)? Akseli9 (talk) 19:32, 10 October 2015 (UTC)
- In response to the claims made by St-Sébas that I have not given a "valid reason", I welcome other parties to read their talk page, where I have repeatedly explained that we list people by their historic birth place and given several examples.
- Secondly, the suggestion that saying she was born in French Algeria is WP:OR is utter nonsense – it is effectively making that claim that Algeria was not part of France in 1953. If anyone is seriously arguing this, then they should be ignored.
- Lastly, if we want to be exact about this, the correct answer to the question of which country she was born in is actually France – Algeria was part of France proper (not even a colony) at the time of her birth – like Corsica is now. However, it is useful to the reader to mention Algeria, so "French Algeria" is probably a good compromise (although Oran, Algeria, France would also be acceptable).
