Issues for discussion
[edit]Good work with this article so far, it's looking great.
A few points I'd like to bring up:
- Kawata's Japanese name is currently incorrect. What's there right now is Sawakita's name. As I do not know Japanese and cannot type it, I cannot make the necessary changes.
- I don't believe Kawata is 190cm. The manga I read (admittedly a Chinese translation) says he was 165cm when he enrolled in high school, and grew OVER 25cm over the next two years. That would place him at over 190cm, though we do not know how much. If I recall correctly, at no point does the manga actually state his height.
- Similarly, we never see Kawata make any three-point shots, so how do we know he's an accurate three point shooter?
- Sendoh's entry includes this line: "However, Sendoh plays Rukawa in a one-on-one match later in the series, and there was no clear winner." This seems to be beside the point, as during the match against Sannoh it's indicated that Anzai was referring to Rukawa's selfishness when he made the statement.
I'll probably go through the article and do a bit of a cleanup soon, as the many edits it's gone through has made the language a bit disjointed. Bhamv 16:00, 2 February 2007 (UTC)
- Addressing 2 of your points:
- I'm going to pull out the kanji for Kawata's name for now and leave it blank, same thing I did for Hotta and Tetsuo cos I don't know how to do the kanji writing either.
- It seems like the lines in Sendoh's description would better fit in Rukawa's.
- I'm also getting the message when I preview the article that it's growing in size, currently ~52 kb so I'm thinking it could be broken up into separate articles, not exactly sure yet how the breakdown will be. BrokenSphere 16:52, 2 February 2007 (UTC)
- I created separate articles for Shohoku, Ryonan, Kainan, and Shoyo. If enough members of a team are covered in some degree of depth (Sannoh and Toyotama are other candidates), then creating separate articles for them should work. --BrokenSphere 03:11, 4 February 2007 (UTC)
- Huh, turns out I just had to check the Japanese Slam Dunk article for Kawata's name. Wonder why I didn't think of this earlier. Bhamv 16:23, 10 May 2007 (UTC)
Naming conventions
[edit]I think the most commonly used names of the characters should be used when mentioning them; for most of them, this happens to be their last names. It'll reduce confusion and won't require having to double check the article to see who is being referred to. Given that the anime has expanded beyond Japan, I also think that Anzai should be referred to as Coach Anzai or Anzai instead of Anzai sensei. --BrokenSphere 20:44, 2 February 2007 (UTC)
- I agree about using the last names. I watch the Japanese version of the anime though, and almost everybody refers to Anzai as Anzai sensei. I'm 99% certain there's another word for coach, other than sensei, so my impression is that the word sensei is used to indicate the high regard Anzai is held in. Even opposing coaches use it. Therefore, I'm not sure if it's necessary to change it to Coach Anzai; though I do not feel strongly enough about this to insist on using sensei. Bhamv 06:05, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
Ryonan and Kainan coaches
[edit]I know I'm not really contributing here, but can someone add a profile for Moichi Taoka in the Ryonan article and another one for Riki Takato in the Kainan article? 201.9.163.176 23:09, 29 March 2007 (UTC)
- If you think you know enough to start the entries on them, by all means, go ahead. --BrokenSphere 00:18, 30 March 2007 (UTC)
- I've added them in. --BrokenSphere 16:53, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
Main character profile
[edit]Where is the description of the main character? Hanamichi Sakuragi is neither properly described in the main article nor here. --Alexxarian (talk) 22:00, 18 December 2008 (UTC)
- He is in Shohoku High School basketball team which was split off into its own article due to the size of this one and is also linked to in the main article. --BrokenSphereMsg me 00:30, 19 December 2008 (UTC)
Teams organization
[edit]Organization of the teams is poor. The strictly alphabetical ordering puts Shohoku as 10th. The teams should be subdivided up by prefecture (or possibly by tournament) to better indicate their relationship to Shohoku. And Shohoku should probably be listed first regardless. Pj81381 (talk) 14:09, 14 February 2009 (UTC)
- There's some justification to this idea. How about this order:
- Shohoku
- Ryonan
- Kainan
- Shoyo
- Sannoh
- Everyone else
- This is based on roughly how important I see each team to the overall story. Bhamv (talk) 16:46, 14 February 2009 (UTC)
- That works. My original thought was something closer to this:
- Kanagawa prefecture tournament:
- Shohoku
- Ryonan
- Kainan
- Shoyo
- Miuradai
- ...
- National tournament:
- Sannoh
- Toyotama
- ...
- Subdividing it like this also makes it more obvious which part of the story the team contributes to. Pj81381 (talk) 05:08, 16 February 2009 (UTC)
Whoa whoa whoa... wait a minute
[edit]The user Tintor2 just made some huge trims to this page and the Shohoku page, removing the years, heights, weights, positions etc from each of the players on the Shohoku page, and similar cuts to this page. There was no edit summary apart from "some clean up". I'm wondering if Tintor2 could explain why such trims are needed? Otherwise I strongly disagree with the cuts, and I hope we can revert them. Bhamv (talk) 15:46, 7 May 2009 (UTC)
The content removed wasm unnecesary for the explanation of the characters. Their years, heights, etc. are pure WP: Fancruft and wont help new readers.Tintor2 (talk) 15:51, 7 May 2009 (UTC)
- I'm afraid I disagree that the content removed was unnecessary. When describing basketball players, are their heights and (perhaps to a lesser extent) weights relevant? Are their playing positions and jersey numbers not relevant? As high school students, are their ages and years not relevant? Michael Jordan, a featured article, lists his height and weight, as well as many other statistics. Characters of Final Fantasy VIII, another featured article, has each character's age in their entries.
- Granted, the birthdays are probably fancruft and could be removed, but I think the rest should be restored. Bhamv (talk) 16:04, 7 May 2009 (UTC)
- The height would be necesary for characters whose height is very notable (Uozumi, Akagi, etc.). Their positions can also be mentioned when talking about their skills.Tintor2 (talk) 17:28, 7 May 2009 (UTC)
- I would say that, as basketball players, their heights are inherently notable. Using Michael Jordan as an example again, his 6-foot-6 height is approximately average in the NBA, yet it's rarely, if ever, omitted when discussing him.
- Would you find it more acceptable if the heights, positions etc were integrated into the player description prose, instead of listed as statistics? Bhamv (talk) 02:40, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
- Sure.Tintor2 (talk) 00:53, 16 May 2009 (UTC)
Merge
[edit]Right now there are characters list of Slam Dunk apart from this focusing in schools. Most of them are very short and would not pass WP: Notability. As such I think they should be merged. I have been trying to cut these list in my sandbox to see how long could they be. I removed some trivials characters with no importance in the plot such as Dr. T and the fans from Rukawa. If there is any character who you think should return, just comment. I ll search also for groups images to add to the article but I ll leave that for later. Regards.Tintor2 (talk) 00:53, 16 May 2009 (UTC)
- I will support any reformatting that will make it more accessible for non-initiated readers. Good luck --KrebMarkt 11:25, 16 May 2009 (UTC)
- I also thought of reorganizing the list, but since its a baskeball manga there are no antagonists.Tintor2 (talk) 14:29, 16 May 2009 (UTC)
- The total list is not as long as I thought it would be with the exclusions, so thanks for the good work. As for group character images, there is one (from a shitajiki, I think) that shows the Shohoku b-ball team with their supporters, so that is a good candidate. Dr. T as you pointed out does not really move the plot along but because of the role that the little tutorial segments play both in the manga and anime and since Inoue is putting himself into the manga, I think the character should be mentioned, if not in a character list then maybe on the main article. BrokenSphereMsg me 06:19, 17 May 2009 (UTC)
- I'm not entirely certain about the merge, but currently the consensus appears be more towards merging so I won't insist it not go ahead. I still think the heights, weights and positions of each player should be included though, either listed or included within the descriptive prose for each character. Bhamv (talk) 11:39, 17 May 2009 (UTC)
Rukawa and Mitsui's positions
[edit]110.54.151.166 keeps changing the positions of Rukawa and Mitsui to shooting guard and small forward, respectively. This is despite the manga series (and, by extension, the anime) repeatedly referring to Rukawa as a forward and Mitsui as a guard. I would like to invite 110.54.151.166 to discuss this issue here, and give reasons for the changes. Bhamv (talk) 03:50, 16 October 2011 (UTC)
Regarding Ayako's surname
[edit]The user Belleliao has recently twice added a surname Inoue to Ayako's section, which incidentally matches the surname of series creator Takehiko Inoue. Despite extensive searches, I have been unable to find any sources that would show Ayako's surname is Inoue. The only indications of her surname come from Chinese language sources, such as the Chinese Wikipedia (in which the information was also inserted by Belleliao), and Baidu.
As far as I'm aware, Ayako's surname has never been provided in the manga or anime. If I am wrong about this, then I am curious where it's been shown before. Until such a source can be produced, however, it would be best to leave this hypothetical surname out of the article. Bhamv (talk) 08:41, 22 April 2014 (UTC)
Added other Shohoku Players
[edit]I hope no one will clip out the articles about other Shohoku players as most of them, although minor characters, have some bearing or impact in the story. :D Tigerholic (talk) 03:36, 5 August 2019 (UTC)
Grades
[edit]Can I suggest instead of stating that they are grade 10, or freshman, or seniors, or all that jazz, we instead use the Japanese grades, rather than the North American system? So say they're eg first grade high schoolers. That, or just state their ages, as it's less confusing. Purplemontart (talk) 06:56, 5 October 2023 (UTC)
