Massawe Day

[edit]

Removing that stuff about Massawe day, it reads like a propaganda leaflet or a reelection campaign. 159.230.140.83 (talk) 22:01, 5 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Wording

[edit]

"long before the White man came" seems quite silly, what did the author mean? Should be reworded "before colonial influence in the area" or something of that ilk or removed completely. Also, citation bloody needed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A00:1028:9197:48F6:C06E:B0B6:3D7B:5F94 (talk) 19:03, 19 May 2015 (UTC) "the word meant a king or chief" what the heck? also formatting issues too. and everything is written in a weird past tense? it all reads like an anecdote written by a 7th grader...2A00:1028:9197:48F6:C06E:B0B6:3D7B:5F94 (talk) 19:05, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Doing some work

[edit]

Hello, I wanted to open topic as I wish to do some work on Kagera Regions' article. If I step on any toes, please let me know here!

Looking at the article I want to reorganize the TOC sections, rename some, add citations and cleanup some of what exist. Any help, criticisms and comments is always welcome.

Thank you, -BevoLJ (talk) 09:35, 2 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi BevoLJ- I saw your post at Wikipedia_talk:Naming_conventions_(geographic_names)#Tanzania_Admin_1_names. When I moved the article to its current name, I must have been sure I was making an improvement, because I see that I did not bring it up for discussion here as I normally would have done if I were in any doubt. But now that I see the current naming convention for the other Region articles, I'm not so sure. The ~ Region formulation does strike me as unconventional, but if that's how they are referred to in Tanzania, maybe it's better to move the article back for consistency. Do people there say "My aunt lives in Kagera Region", or "My aunt lives in Kagera"? Eric talk 20:41, 14 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much for the reply! I am sure the move was made in the best of faith, only wish to make some consistency so the articles are as easy to get information and understanding of their subject for all people. I will cover the street speak of the aunt, then districts so to understand regions. Before please know I am inexperienced, and very much defer to your wiki expertise and experience for what you think is best!
For the street speak, or even on JamiiForums - reddit for watz -, it depends on where your aunt is moving from. If from Dar es Salaam, you would say she is moving to the Lake Zone. If from Mwanza you would be specific and say she is moving to Bukoba. It is a little odd, I know, but just how it is. haha. Lake Zone was a large area governed that was NW TZ before independence. Even after independence when the other regions like Mwanza, Mara, Shinyanga and so on, became their own regions with names the Kagera Region was still called West Lake Region until after the Kagera War with Uganda.
For why the "Mkoa wa" is important and Mkoa capitalized, it is easier if first understanding districts, then can understand Dar and Mwanza Regions which can be confusing. Arusha Region has two Arusha districts. haha! One district is a city, Jiji la Arusha, the other district is just a district, Wilaya ya Arusha. The district that is just a district is the area outside and around the city. So it is important to be clear if speaking of the city, district or region when speaking about Arusha. Many others have the same. Tabora, Dodoma, ... many others.
For Regions, states, the two important and confusing ones are Dar es Salaam and Mwanza. It is these that can make consistency important. Dar is the largest city, Mwanza the second largest. They both have regions, but the districts are parts of the city. So there is no Dar District, or Mwanza District. Just Dar Region, Mwanza Region. Mr User:Halidtz has recently done an amazing job fixing the Dar confusion! How Mwanza was never confused the same can only be by the grace of God. Kagera is the only other that lacks consistency with other regions.
An important note of why it is done this way is how the cities are. Not just Dar and Mwanza, but those two in particular when speaking of regions. During the daytime Mwanza may have over 2 million people, but only 600k - 800k sleep in Mwanza. In the USA 80% is urban people. TZ is the opposite. So it is a little confusing, but in practice it makes a lot of sense of why this is done.
So that is why the Mkoa-, like Jiji-, Mji-, or Wilaya-, is an important distinction and is included and capitalized. As I said, I defer to your much greater experience and expertise, and only wanted to point out and hopefully fix, an inconsistency in the adm1 zones. Any questions of confusion please ask! Thank you. -BevoLJ (talk) 06:27, 15 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The term “Region” is a an actual geopolitical legal term and sub national government here in Tanzania, somewhat similar to provinces and states in other nations . As the each Region (Mkoa) has a Regional Commissioner whom is appointed by the president to serve five year terms. Within each region there are Districts that are led by both a District Commissioner (appointed by the president) and a Member of Parliament whom is elected by residents of said District. The latter represents the District at our parliament with other MPs of our Country’s 184 Districts. . Some Districts are Municipal Councils that are governed differently than regular Districts. I have attached some sources of the actual government acts that explain it in further detail. I agree, I believe thats what we are trying to do in the wiki articles is to clarify that difference. Many thanks,

I have no experience with how the administrative regions of Tanzania are referred to in English; I was going by how administrative regions of other countries are referred to, e.g. Brittany. So I would defer to those with knowledge of Tanzania. Eric talk 11:35, 15 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the reply. I spent some time on the naming conventions page and I think I understand everything well enough to say Kagera Region is most common, and most clarity. Also consistent. I will move it now.
Thank you for your time. -BevoLJ (talk) 11:48, 15 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

In the History section, this ref is listed:[1] Does anyone have a link or access to that source? Is it a published paper/book? A film? - Procyonidae (talk) 22:41, 20 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
