Appointment to Privy Council

[edit]

The PCO website incorrectly states that "John Abbott" was appointed to the Privy Council on October 15, 2007. [1] However, the Parliament of Canada web site clearly shows that Jim Abbott is a Privy Councillor as the prenom "Hon." appears in his title. [2]. His article was changed to reflect this appointment, but it was undone, most likely because of the error on the PCO site. Perhaps in light of this the changes should be reinstated. Well, it actually isn't clear from the Parliament of Canada website. The list you cite is only one of many lists pertaining to current MPs on that site, and is the only one suggesting that he is a Privy Councillor. Other lists on the site, including the list of MPs who are Privy Councillors, do not list Mr. Abbott. Furthermore, two days after his alleged appointment he spoke in the House, and Hansard clearly identifies him as "Mr. Jim Abbott", not "Hon. Jim Abbott" as he would be were he a Privy Councillor. Finally, his own website, which has been updated a number of times in the last week, makes no reference to any appointment. It seems pretty clear that the error is in that one list on the Parliament of Canada website, and not the PCO site. Barring clear evidence that he has been appointed to the Privy Council, no mention of it should appear in this article.PoliSciMaster 05:06, 22 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I checked his site this morning (October 22), and it appears as though they have updated it with a story showing him taking the oath. It can be seen here. [3] They are probably just a little slow to get their site updated. As well, a quick check of Hansard [4] from October 19th shows him now being referred to as "Hon. Jim Abbott".
