Confusion

[edit]

In "Gone North — Volume 1",[1] the Appendix VII - Wales Rugby Union Caps Who Turned Professional, states that an Iorwerth Isaac won 2 Wales (RU) caps in 1933 while at Cardiff, and went onto play rugby league with Leeds.

However, according to both scrum.com, and wru.co.uk, no such player as Iorwerth Isaac has ever won caps for Wales (RU), but they identify two people named Iorwerth winning Wales (RU) caps, they being Iorwerth Jones, and Iorwerth Evans.

"Gone North — Volume 1" states that Iorwerth Jones won 5 Wales (RU) caps in 1927/28 while at Llanelli, and also went onto play RL with Leeds, the number and date of the caps is confirmed by both scrum.com, and wru.co.uk,[2][3] but there are no evident references to Iorwerth Jones winning caps for Wales (RL).

"The British Rugby League Records Book"[4] and walesrugbyleague.co.uk[5] both state that Iorwerth Isaac won 2-caps for Wales (RL) while at Leeds in 1933 and 1935, and rugbyleagueproject.org corroborates these matches having Iorwerth Isaac at Prop for the 1933 match against Australia, and at Second-row for the 1935 match against France.

The rugby union references have Iorwerth Evans' Wales (RU) matches as being in February, and March of 1934, but the rugby league references have Iorwerth Isaac's Wales (RU) matches as being in 1933, with his Wales (RL) matches being in 1933 and 1935, and although it would be possible to play RU and RL internationals in the same year, at the time the antagonism between the RFU and the Northern Union (RFL) precluded footballers moving to-and-from the codes, meaning playing RL in 1933 would have precluded playing RU in 1934.

According to scrum.com, Iorwerth Evans' full name is Iorwerth Evans Evans, so there is no evidence of Isaac being a middle name.

Iorwerth Isaac's forename is "misspelt" as Iowerth, i.e. the first r is missing, on walesrugbyleague.co.uk, and rugbyleagueproject.org.

I think this is a merger of two players. Iorweth Evans (1908-1985) for whom I have no record at Cardiff (though an I. Evans did represent Cardiff for just 6 games between 1931 and 1932), he did represent Bedford Athletic and London Welsh. Thomas Iorwerth Jones (1903-1983), did represent Llanelli before joining Leeds; playing his first game for them on 13 February 1932. FruitMonkey (talk) 21:04, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Iorrie Isaacs (1910-1966) was a Cardiff and Pontypridd player who switched to Leeds RLFC in 1933. FruitMonkey (talk) 21:14, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
