Video mention / noodle hydration

[edit]

It may be of interest to editors that this page is mentioned on a Bon Appétit video Pastry Chef Attempts to Make Gourmet Instant Ramen, where it implicitly questions the (referenced) claim in the article about the hydration level of noodles (water absorption of 30-38% of flour weight, which Claire Saffitz finds too dry to make by hand).

worldwide section -- blow it up?

[edit]

This entire section is a little silly. So, yeah, instant noodles are popular pretty much everywhere. We could completely eliminate this entire section and just leave the intro. I suggest at minimum removing every section that is currently unsourced. If someone wants to add something back, they need to find a source. People are clearly landing here, discovering their country isn't mentioned, and adding, "Instant noodles are popular in Denmark" or wherever. --valereee (talk) 20:21, 16 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I completely agree. The Mirror Cracked (talk) 21:42, 16 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I think that was unnecessary. There were sections that did have sources that were eliminated as well. Why couldn't you have just removed the completely unsourced sections? 71.43.45.234 (talk) 12:39, 19 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
IP, you can restore if you disagree; I won't revert, but my reasoning was that the section itself was completely unnecessary. Instant noodle is popular pretty much everywhere. A long section listing every country where they're eaten just seems silly; it would be more helpful to readers if we talked about where they aren't eaten. --valereee (talk) 13:05, 19 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, after a reversion, I've removed only the full sections that had zero sources. It still leaves a lot of unsourced material in there. I would like to discuss removing the entire section, though, as almost all the sourced material is simply a list of the popular brands in each country. Maybe we could replace it with a table of brands by country and a link to List of instant noodle brands? --valereee (talk) 11:46, 29 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Possible updates to the history section?

[edit]

I have seen an article that claims the process of making instant noodles by boiling then frying them has been known in China for quite a while before Momofuko Ando came on scene.

I am not sure if it is a credible source, but it might be a useful bit of info to add to the history section. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2352618116300828 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.172.79.210 (talk) 18:23, 9 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Impact

[edit]

I believe that the article should add a section on how ramen has affected people with lower incomes or budgets. Ramen is a very quick and easy snack that could be made for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lburris801 (talkcontribs) 16:54, 25 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Go Pek-Hok (Momofuku Ando) Background

[edit]

current edit: "Modern instant noodles were created by Japanese inventor Momofuku Ando in Japan." my edit: "Instant noodles were invented in Japan by Taiwanese immigrant Go Pek-Hok, Japanese name Momofuku Ando."

A user reverted my edits in regards to the ethnicity of Go Pek-Hok (Momofuku Ando), the inventor of instant noodles, adding that "subsequent edits are of low quality and offer little in tems of improvement". I disagree with their removal. Go Pek-Hok was an ethnic Chinese born and raised in Taiwan, who later became a naturalized Japanese citizen to Japan after world war 2, where he invented instant noodles. While Go Pek-Hok was a naturalized Japanese citizen, the current sentence gives the reader the impression that instant noodles were invented by an ethnic Japanese, which is false. My edits made the distinction, and gives credit to a person of Chinese/Taiwanese descent. It doesn't make sense to mention his citizenship while ignoring his ethnic background. Purpose of the edit is to avoid false impressions, making it relevant to the article.

Therefore, to avoid false impressions, a clear distinction should be made. — Preceding unsigned comment added by LilAhok (talkcontribs) 17:41, 25 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

May 2022 article overhaul

[edit]

Hi Thumperward, you recently performed some large-scale changes to this article, only providing very brief explanations/summaries thereof. I am uncertain what the purpose and justifications for these changes are, would you mind explaining? Revirvlkodlaku (talk) 02:08, 8 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The only major change was shifting the huge list of global examples to the sub-article, as it was massively excessive for this one. The rest was mostly just collapsing short sections and reordering things more logically. Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward) (talk) 11:14, 8 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
