References

[edit]

I don't have the time to check and complete them right now, but I'm assuming they're books? If so, they should have years specified and be put into a proper reference format. APA seems to be popular here, so that'd be something like:

Butler, Sandra S. (1957). Middle-aged, female and homeless. City: Publisher.

Just a heads-up. :) --FreelanceWizard 22:34, 6 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Moreover, for any of the claims in this article that derive from references in the Refs section, those claims need links to their specific reference (preferably with page numbers per specific reference usage). At the moment, it is unclear as to which refs are intended to support which claims. Devmage (talk) 17:52, 3 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Neutrality dispute

[edit]

Reviving this discussion, this page has seen a fair amount of attention in the last week, including heavy markup for missing citations and weasel words. The weasel words especially are troubling, re: NPoV, and should be replaced with language that is objective in nature. Example: "The lack of food [stamps] eats into the housing budget." should be replaced with statistics on the percentage of household budgets that food stamps are intended to cover, among households that are (or were previously) eligible for food stamps. Devmage (talk) 17:57, 3 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This Article needs to be removed ASAP —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.167.17.98 (talk) 04:42, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Agree! It needs to be removed fast! Most of what is written in here is unverified nonsense...probably written by some men's rights advocate! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 15.251.169.69 (talk) 20:27, 28 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm creating this section because there isn't one. What is the dispute about, exactly? What should be done to fix it? I don't see anything in the article that necessarily screams NPoV to me. It can't be fixed if no one explains it. --FreelanceWizard 22:34, 6 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

This article just seems to state over and over again how men are the problem and always refers to women as the victims. Essentially the bulk of the article is opinion in combination with blanket statements and only the facts that support the author’s ideas. Making this article NPoV would be creating an extension of the page on homelessness referring only to the relation between the homeless populations of men and women. This article could very easily be deleted if you included in homelessness or in homelessness in the United States the percentages of homeless that are female and possibly a blurb on their history. Projectflyingpenguin 01:47, 7 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think I agree with your assessment that this article could be easily merged. The reasons why women (in this case, abused women, which is what this article is generally about) end up homeless

and the potential solutions to the problem are related to homelessness, but aren't inherently part of the same article. However, upon reading the article, I can definitely see the issue with the tone, especially in the first paragraph. There's also the matter of replicated information from other articles and no parenthetical citations (but that's a cleanup issue, not an NPoV one). In any event, if facts exist to contradict the author's view, that's great; they should be put in. For the record, I have no vested interest in this article; I just came across it while doing newpages patrol and thought the NPoV tag was curious. I figured it'd be worth discussing to see if we can get some consensus here to get the tag pulled.

I think I'll go poke FCYTravis who put up the tag originally and ask him to make a statement here. That'd probably be helpful to the editors looking at the page. --FreelanceWizard 03:20, 7 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I think this article could be merged because there is alot of information presented here not directly related to homelessness in women. The divorce section is a good example, and could be reduced to a single sentence linking divorce and homelessness in women without giving various statistics on divorce —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 67.177.230.36 (talk) 04:11, 30 March 2007 (UTC).[reply]
That is a very poor reason for this article to exist in an encyclopedia. Encyclopedia's aren't soap boxes for political activism (in this case for a very bad political issue). This must be just eliminated. There isn't even enough here to justify folding it into a topic like homelessness. Furthermore, this is not the place for discussing and airing out solutions to political problems. Save it for the op ed page of the Village Voice
An encyclopedia is intended as a compendium of facts, and if the facts support different challenges between men and women re: homelessness, then those differences should be reported. This may not have been the case at your time of writing, but at current, there are not enough verifiable facts included in this article to make a judgment on this either way. Maintainers of the article should focus on better sourcing the article, at which point a discussion on its neutrality would be appropriate - not before that. Right now it's just a poorly written article with a modicum of cited support, better a candidate for refimprove and weasel (as I added) than anything else. Needs world perspective or to be renamed "Homelessness in women in the United States"

[edit]

It seesm to only discuss the United States. Opinion on expanding verse renaming to restricted subject? RJFJR 19:03, 4 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Homelessness "in" women?

I mean, really. Grammar, people. The title makes no sense. A2Kafir (and...?) 04:15, 19 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

single-parent family mothers

[edit]

Who the heck came up with that word?! Just say single mothers! Honestly the effort put into this document that it looks like those women are strong is mind blowing — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:AA10:4102:1B80:CD2F:9CBC:BB4F:6E0E (talk) 13:32, 9 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Changing the article

[edit]

Hello all, this article has many issues associated with it including biased perspective, lack of citations and/or outdated sources, terrible flow, participating in the stereotype of homeless women being vagrants, and much more. We plan to organize the article as such:

# 1. Historical Background
# 2. Altering the Domestic Violence section
# 3. Services and programs for Homeless women and families
# 4. changing the Decline of the Welfare State section
# 5. Changing the homeless women and crime section
# 6. Changing the health and healthcare section
# 7. Changing the menstruation issues section

We will continue to update this talk post as needed if we implement other changes. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Eren7013 (talkcontribs) 22:30, 25 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Feminization of Poverty

[edit]

I believe enhancing this section with more background on the topic's origins would be beneficial. The article lacks depth in discussing the feminization of poverty, particularly during Reagan's presidency, which is a significant aspect that warrants further exploration. Riyarajani (talk) 00:55, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Neutrality and Background

[edit]

This article would benefit from the addition of background information, as it jumps into statistics straight away. The lead section of this article fails to set-up the main arguments of the article, and the “Historical background” portion requires elaboration to convey the events that ultimately led to homeless women in the United States. In addition to this, the tone exhibit bias at some points and should be adjusted to maintain an objective standpoint. Jbains03 (talk) 01:42, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
