His mother is portuguese, his father is maybe from italy/spain/portugal. He was born in Portugal, so why the &$%# he is at wikipedia as a "spanish explorer"?!

He was in the service of Spain. Rbraunwa 15:57, 30 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your point being ? (I could tell just for instance "João Rodrigues Cabrilho", discoverer of West America (California), in the service of Spain but born from portuguese parents, in Portugal and considered, logically, as a Portuguese)

Didn't he live in Hispanola (Domincan Republic) for a time? There is a house he lived in there. --Bcsmith 02:34, 21 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

As I said in my edit summary: He was born in portugal, the son of an italian who spent most of his life in spain.... it's fine the way it was. Thingg 00:50, 7 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"t's fine the way it was" How dare you keep your personal judgement about the name just because "t's fine the way it was". The name is wrong and you know that, just see the article about Joao Rodrigues Cadrilho and many other examples..

My god, never wondered wikipedia had such ignorant and close-minded administrator ! Hope there's some rules in wikipedia for this kind of situation. I could tell you thousands of examples, people employed by states, living most of their lives worldwide but still remaining with their name of origin!

For instance Magellan..or Cadrilho, who discovered california. Both were at service for Spain but that never made them Spanish. I think you should read some texts about nacionality back in those days. And by the way, there's not any document relating his baptizement where we could read his spanish name, you know why ? Because he was born in Portugaal and had not any spanish parents.. He did have a brother, born in Spain of spanish mother, considered logically as a Spanish, that's all!

When was he born, and when did he die?
