[edit]I removed the following because 1) It seems out of place in Dombrowski's article, readers can click Leyland's link to learn more about him; and 2) It's not great English and isn't entirely clear:
"[Leyland,] a former Detroit minor league catcher and manager who had retired after 14 years (1986-99) as an elite big-league manager"
