Auction of Five Paintings

[edit]

The auction took place early in March of 1977, I think. Now, who can be fastest to a library with a file of TIME magazine (which reported the auction)? J S Ayer (talk) 15:23, 20 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I found the announcement of the impending auction, but not the account of how it went. Perhaps I can find some hide-bound traditionalist institution with the Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature. Several admirers of the Churchills in New Zealand got $26000 or $28000 (I forget exactly) together and sent an agent to London with instructions to buy the pictures, if he could within that amount, and have them crated and returned to Chartwell. He was left in the dust within minutes. J S Ayer (talk) 00:27, 20 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dame > Lady ?

[edit]

The box suggests she became Lady Churchill when Winston was knighted in 1953; despite being already Dame Clementine in her own right since 1946. Between 1953 and 1965 when she was appointed to the Lords, was she generally known as "Dame Clementine Churchill" or as "Lady Churchill", or a bit of both? Some pre-existing dames defer to their reflected titles after their husbands finally get their knighthoods, but some insist on retaining their Dame title. -- Jack of Oz ... speak! ... 00:24, 14 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Letter

[edit]

Could someone with the references please check the opening of Churchill's letter, quoted on the page, beginning "My dear Lady Blanche Hozier,..." It's more likely that he would have begun "Dear Lady Blanche.." Just a small thing, but it may as well be correct.  Giano  21:18, 21 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

@Giano: Sorry, only 4 years late. Have checked the relevant Companion Volume of the Randolph Churchill/Gilbert biography which confirms the letter was addressed to Lady Blanche Hozier. It also confirms that the letter wasn't sent, however, and I've added this detail. KJP1 (talk) 08:09, 8 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
