Comparison to other less expensive mexican restuarant. (blacklist link redacted)

Chipotle is overrated and expensive for what they pay in ingredients.

Someone needs to write when McDonalds bought out the original owner and for how much. It should be put under History.

I think my chipotle charges extra for guacamole... the page says the cost is based only on the meat.

Is the fact that a burrito is big and thus has a lot of calories grounds for saying it isn't healthy? How does it rate with other measures of healthiness (fat content, etc)?

Recently an anonymous user added chipotless.com to the external links. Chipotless.com and Chipotlediet.com are in fact the same site. These sites contain content scraped from legitimate chipotle fan sites. In a later edit another anonymous user inserted that scraped content for a long standing external link and since chipotlediet.com and chipotless.com both point to the same URL it effectively duplicates that one site in the external sites area. I removed both of these things because I'm concerned that this is basically spam and amounts to vandalism when it removes valid long-respected content. Perhaps it's just a well intentioned but uninformed user, but I don't feel these edits were appropriate. greggles 15:39, 5 October 2007 (UTC)

You ask me to explain to you why my chipotle site is relevant….or else. Your childish threats to continually remove my link only beg one question: Why should we in the chipotle community explain anything to you? Are you the czar of all things chipotle? Must all chipotle fans go through you? Many people have blogs about chipotle. Not just you Greg. To know why ChipotleDiet.com is relevant, all one must do is merely visit the site. And you have. In fact you have registered for a username, and are a member of ChipotleDiet.com Greg. If my site is irrelevant, why did you join?

1. “Scraped Content"
The chipotlelovers.com content appears in a Frame on my site. Frames are commonly used web technologies that (until now) have never been considered unscrupulous. You claim to be web saavy Greg, but your feign ignorance about frames when it suits you. Visitors to my site can see and use the chipotlelovers.com calorie calculator. Chipotlelovers.com gets 1) all the credit for the hits (web stats), 2) all the revenue from the google ads, 3) a clearly-labeled banner that says “chipotle lovers”, and 4)their full menu navigation is left intact so that my visitors may peruse their content. You use dramatic words in your argument like “scraped content”, in a thinly veiled attempt to paint me as underhanded.

2. ChipotleDiet.com / ChipotLess.com
Yes. They both show the content of my site. Is this some sort of crime? Many (most, in fact) major websites have multiple domains. I came up with “chipotless” first, and later decided that “ChipotleDiet” was less confusing for visitors. However, many people still use “chipotless.com”, so I kept it active. This seems like an elementary issue that someone of intelligence could figure out in 10 seconds of thought. Yet, you used this situation as an opportunity to heap your McCarthy-ism on me.

3. Removed a “long standing link”
Mea Culpa. This one is my fault. I will admit that I am new to Wiki. Here’s what happened: I found a fantastic burrito calorie calculator (the aforementioned chipotlelovers.com). The javascript allows you to check boxes and see the resulting changes immediately. No hitting “submit”, and the hitting the “back” button. I wanted to add it to the wiki, and I did. It seemed silly to leave the other (inferior) calculator link in place, so I removed it. MISTAKE. I know this now. Don’t hold this against me forever. Please forgive this beginner mistake? Remember: this is a Chipotle wiki, NOT “The Greg Knaddison Show”.

  • I would say yes, and would point to In-N-Out as an example. The quesadilla option is very popular among parents, and was first suggested to us by someone who worked there. I can safely say that prices of individual menu items really do not belong in articles. If you desire to list the prices of "secret" items, I would recommend either using this talk page or setting up a new article entitled something like Secret menu items at Chipotle Mexican Grill and then linking to that from the main Chipotle article.--MatthewUND 05:36, May 14, 2005 (UTC)
    • I can agree with not putting the prices in the article. I just did it because I knew that one, but in retropect you're right. It would, however, be nice to get what all of the items and options are. I think "secret items" could probably get their own subsection like in the In-N-Out article. Investigative Journalisim

I went to Chipotle earlier today, I have information on the "secret items". They are actuly part of a Parent's Menu system, allowing one to make smaller, cheaper orders. For example, a single cheese only quesadilla for 55 cents, a single taco or a simple bol. This information was on a small card along with the suggestion that you can make any sort of custom order, I belive this explains the "secret items" rumor. (Jack Cain 00:18, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC))

  • actually at Chipotle they'll basically make you anything you can describe to them. I work there and I was asked to make nachos once, it was hard because we don't really have a good way to melt the cheese, but some other Chipotles might. If you can come up with any combination of things you see in front of you they'll make it and do their best to charge you a fair price (they often just call it some number of sides and an extra meat or something). --CallmeNiel 22:28, 12 November 2005 (UTC)

This article sounds like an advertisement

I used to work for Chipotle and trust me, they are not as innovative as you would think. These "secret" menu items of which you speak have been available at least since I last worked there in 2003, and they are not "secret" but simply not listed on the big menu board.

Chipotle also has a history of employing illegal Mexican workers (I am saying this from experience) and I'm quite certain the store I worked at has a lawsuit pending against them for this.

I heartily agree. My first reaction to the introduction (with language like "emphasis on quality") is it reads like ad copy. Further elabouration and fiddling details (e.g. the weigh of the burritos) and the blatant plug for the Free Burrito Days promotion (including calls to action) do not belong in Wikipedia.     • Then make suggestions. As a general rule it does not read like an ad to me, but there is room for improvement. I don't think "Burrito day" is a blatant plug, and didn't see "calls to action". It doesn't read like an ad to me. I find it highly accurate. Had I written it, I would have poured more praise :) The food is very good, and the quality if high and consistent.

Also, employing illegal Mexican workers is not a Chipotle practice... it is a restaurant practice. Every restaurant that I know employs illegal immigrants.

Just a note on the hiring of illegals... I used to work at a chicagoland store and can tell you that at last years Day Without an Immigrant, some of the chicago stores closed due to lack of workers... draw your own conclusion. Wheres the ICE when you need them? - Former S.M.

As someone who has never visited a Chipotle and has only been to a Qdoba once, I find the article to be a bit promotional. I understand that certain parts of the article need to be rewritten in a NPOV. Also, I noticed some of the parts in the "Promotions" section is written like an advertisement. The "Environmental Responsibility" section is also very promotional of the restaurant's reputation and standards. In fact I find this section title not to be as neutral as possible and will think of a subheading that is more appropriate.Ginamarie112 (talk) 15:13, 3 March 2008 (UTC)

Music?

As a half-joke, I added a Decor section... but it's basically all made up. I never thought it'd last this long. I don't know anything about interior decoration or architectural style... can this section be cleaned up? Clueless (talk) 03:24, 8 December 2007 (UTC)
  • Oppose I fail to understand why it needs to be taken out. It shouldn't be an either/or situation. If there is a real problem with the information in the music section, then correct the mistake. I honestly didn't know that about their music until I read it here, and I think it has encyclopedic value. Please by all means write up a section on the decor, but don't delete the music section. Also, as a note, it is usually not a nomination/second system to decide whether to delete something, it is usually by an informal vote, discussion and then see if there is consensus. -- MicahMN | μ 17:54, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

Unexplained reversion

  • I think I did that. It was unexplained because I'm really tired from vandal fighting.  :) My thoughts behind reversion were:
    • That it was a malformed entry (the "as" lacked a space, running it into the McDonald's link)
    • The use of "so-called" is POV. It either is or isn't.
    • We already address that it's a subsidary, that adds nothing.
    • It was made by an anon.
Strictly speaking I should not have used rollback, but it is such a sweet seductive siren of efficiency that I lacked the will to resist.  :) Wikibofh(talk) 00:14, 6 January 2006 (UTC)
“Partner brand” in this context is a loaded term (and actually a proper noun). It was a specific growth strategy McDonald’s was using with (some of) its subsidiaries — a strategy they have since backed away from, I gather. I think that’s why the anonymous contributor used the “so-called” qualifier. I think it’s legitimate to use quote marks (“scare quotes”), italics, or “so-called” to introduce new terms, but it’s always a good idea to follow that up with an actual definition. —Fleminra 01:46, 6 January 2006 (UTC)

Alcoholic beverages

Don't they have these at ALL chipotles? I haven't been to a chipotle where they do not sell alcoholic beverages.

I haven't either, but it's certainly possible that Chipotle operates restaurants in areas where alcohol sales would not be legal. Certainly worth looking into. --ABQCat 04:09, 12 July 2006 (UTC)
I can confirm that at least one Chipotle in San Diego does not sell alcohol. Not sure why.
There are definitely quite a few that do not. I think it's usually to do with acquiring a license, which can expense in some places, and since many Chipotles are not located in their own building, there may be restrictions there as well. -Topher0128 128.252.93.146 19:07, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
  • Chipotles sometimes need to apply for a liquor license and appear before city councils/city zoning boards before selling liquor. This can take months depending on if the city even has a license to give out. Indiana limits the number of licenses that can be distributed so if a store in Indy was built they have to wait for a permit to become available.
The company opened a new location in my hometown and I was told they wouldn't be able to get a liquor license until sometime in 2009? So yeah, as mentioned before, (sadly) not all locations have alcohol.--AgnosticPreachersKid (talk) 10:28, 14 January 2008 (UTC)

Weird Sentence

Following sentence sounds odd, "Everything other than the meats, pinto beans (with bacon), cheese, sour cream, and honey vinaigrette for salads is vegan. The cheese is made from vegetable based rennet in order to be suitable for vegetarians." Can someone fix this? The grammar and flow of that sentence is fine, but I don't understand why it excludes the cheese from the list of vegan foods, then explains that it IS vegan. --LocrialTheSequel 06:06, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

It explains that it is vegetarian, however that does not mean that it is vegan. Their website explains this pretty explicitly for folks who don't recognize the difference between the two. 204.69.40.13 17:08, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

Hiring Illegals

Why was there a mention of this a few days ago but now its gone? Does someone from Chioptle not want people to know that it hires illegals? The Fox news station in Chicago reported on it last year so its fact, like it or not - Iowa Mikey

It was removed because it is an unsourced statement. Here is the offending statement;
"Chipotle is one of many corporations known for hiring illegal immigrants in its restaurants. During the "Day Without An Immigrant" marches in 2006, 29 Chicagoland Chipotle stores were closed down due to lack of workers. It is unknown if Chipotle has yet been investigated by the ICE."
The first sentence is not verifiable.
The second sentence cited an article that said "The rallies shut down 29 branches of Chipotle Mexican Grill, a Denver-based fast-casual dining chain." It did not state that they were closed due to lack of workers. No other mention of Chipotle appeared in that article, and no reason was given as to why the restaurants were closed. On that basis, the citation is invalid for the sentence it was applied to.
The last sentence contained weasel words, and was removed for that reason.
Find a citation to back up your claim, and add it back to the article. I am not affiliated with Chipotle in any way. Patrick925 02:03, 23 May 2007 (UTC)

Architecture and styling

Would someone please add a section on the unique style of the interiors? It's kind of retro, kind of moderne, very industrial. Even the official website mentions it. However, I don't know enough about design to use terms properly or add context. 128.158.145.51 20:54, 5 June 2007 (UTC)


Celiac/Gluten-Fee Dining

I think the sentance "Many of these items are gluten free though the flour tortillas for both the burritos and the small tacos contain gluten." is a bit misleading as it could lead some to belive that other items besides the tortialls are not gluten-free, when in fact everything is gluten-free except for the four tortillas. A better explination would read "All menu times are gluten-free except for both the large burrito tortillas and small soft taco tortillas" I also beleive that the following sentance "The hot red salsa contains small amounts of gluten from distilled vinegar." is incorrect because anything distilled (ex: vinegar, alcohol, ect) has been approved by the American Dietary Association and many Celiac Groups as being safe for consumption due to the gluten particles being removied during the distillation process.

My only goal in adding the gluten-free info is so that other people with celiac disease know that they have the option to go to Chipotle and get a meal. It is VERY hard to find anyplace to eat when you can't eat gluten.--SpitfirePisces 23:16, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

  • Recycled content in the galvanized steel and stainless steel prevalent in Chipotle restaurant interiors is 60% to 90% and drywall is 100%. The tables are stainless steel topped and supported by common steel plumbing pipes that are threaded into standard brackets that attach to the floor.
  • Low VOC (volatile organic compounds) primers, paints and caulking are used in all Chipotles. A waterborne clear lacquer has been substituted for our typical spar urethane for all interior woodwork (CWM) has been employed at two Chipotles construction sites to study how to address demolition, reclamation and diversion opportunities at new Chipotle sites. More Chipotle sites will be part of a baseline study for new construction to create standard CWM protocols. CWM diverts construction and demolition waste from landfill disposal by renovating or restoring existing architectural features, such as a tile or terrazzo floor, and recycling or donating fixtures and construction materials in good condition to organizations such as Habitat for Humanity. Demolition costs are increased since more time is needed to remove fixtures and materials intact, but much is off set by lower landfill fees. Overall, waste, building construction and demolition contribute between 25% to 30% of all landfill mass.
  • In-store glass, plastic, and cardboard recycling has been tested in about 25 Chipotles thus far and will be expanded to 100 by the end of the year. The customer glass and plastic recycling apparatus has gone through a few design permutations to ease customer recycling. Once a satisfactory design is found, it will roll out to all the stores. The same issues apply to the kitchen staff recycling cardboard boxes from vendors.
  • Retro plate floor finishing was adopted in 2005 to polish and permanently seal and strengthen new and renovated Chipotle concrete floors. Previously the finish was a stained concrete; yet, to improve its green quotient, Chipotle landed upon retro plate finishing. No solvents or volatile organic compounds are used. Rather, the process is odorless and nonflammable and uses a formulation of water and naturally occurring materials.
  • Tankless water heaters are in all Chipotle where allowed. The system provides hot water on demand and eliminates the need for traditional water tank heaters. They save space and energy and exceed the IECC 2000 efficiency requirements. Some local codes do not allow this technology since it is new to the US and in some cases it cannot be used in special conditions at the site, i.e. a high rise building.[citation needed]
  • Low-E (low-emissivity) insulated glass keeps the heat outside in the summer and inside during the winter, thus decreasing the air-conditioning and heating requirements.
  • Factory-programmed thermostat settings regulate heating and air conditioning levels as per a set temperature scale versus the preference of a particular manager.
  • High efficiency heating and air conditioning roof-top units are in all restaurants. In addition, Chipotle has installed efficient grill hoods with improved hood/make up air to reduce exhaust.

In 2002, Chipotle built its first restaurant in Austin, Texas that was certified "green" by the city's Austin Energy Green Buildings project with a three-star rating. Two years later, Chipotle built a second restaurant that was given a four-star rating. The four-star designation was given to a Chipotle constructed within a vacant historic building. Thus far, Chipotle is the only restaurant to which Austin has given a four-star green rating.

I'm tired of this fight. As per WP:EL#Links normally to be avoided, #12: "Links to blogs and personal web pages, except those written by a recognized authority." The site is a blog, provides no indication of authority, is not an official site, and should therefore not be included on this page. so, how does one order at subway and quiznos? what is layout of subway and quiznos. not everyone in the world (including user) lives in the fast-casual food chain.

Fertilizers; ADA complaint

I slightly reworded the part about "Farmed and Dangerous." It said that nitrogen fertilizers are made from "nitrogen from the air and hydrogen present in natural gas from fracking." I put a link to Haber-Bosch process, which indeed does use nitrogen from the air to make nitrogen fertilizers. The part about hydrogen wasn't clear to me. Did it mean the hydrogen was a result of fracking? Was it confusing steam reforming with fracking? I reworded it to say that the hydrogen came from natural gas, and that the process was energy-intensive.

And I reworded the part about the ADA lawsuit. I felt "the plaintiff ... has a history of filing ADA-related lawsuits" portrayed him in a negative light. The ADA is law in the U.S., and the courts found that Chipotle was not in compliance with that law. The character of the plaintiff has nothing to do with the ruling. There is absolutely no need to treat Maurizio Antoninetti (October 7, 1956 – May 9, 2011) with deference here in Wikipedia: He was working hand-in-glove with his San Diego-based lawyer, enriching themselves at public expense, abusing the the American legal system to shake down businesses that they would systematically target. Luckily for Chipotle Mexican Grill, they had the financial resources to survive Antoninetti's legal attack and stay in business. He and his crooked lawyer's efforts succeeded in getting a few businesses to go bankrupt, depriving other citizens of the services previously provided by said businesses. Antoninetti would pretend to be a "victim" of discrimination at places he had never frequented before. As a well-paid professor at the School of Public Affairs, University of California, San Diego, Antoninetti could have easily afforded an electric wheelchair with a seat lifting mechanism, but he and his lawyer weren't interested in that. Foodborne illness

With this edit I removed the phrase: "Although Chipotle may not necessarily have any more problems with foodborne illnesses than any other large restaurant chain..." It may, it may not: it is pure speculation. Furthermore, the references appended to 'support' this speculation were simply lists of FDA and CDC investigations. This is an example of WP:SYNTH: "using material from multiple sources to reach or imply a conclusion not explicitly stated by any of the sources" (my emphasis). Key people in infobox

Please, when making changes, such as removing names which should be in the infobox, state your reasons. I will now explain why I am going to put the names back in. https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Template:Infobox_company , key people are: "Up to four key individuals closely associated with the company." The instructions continue: "Generally list prominent, current executives within the company holding key positions such as chairman, chief executive officer, president, VP of design, etc., but do not list roles below chief officer level if they are not notable. Do include top executives even not individually notable, but do not wikilink them." It seems clear that the names that were removed fit the criteria of "prominent current execs." Full-disclosure, I'm a Chipotle employee, and Chipotle wanted to suggest a few minor factual corrections, hoping this is the right way to do that.

Intro paragraph and info box for locations:

  • Instead of 2,000 locations, Chipotle would like to suggest more than 2400 locations [1]
  • Instead of net income of US$475.6 million, Chipotle would like to suggest net income of US$176.3 million. [2]
  • Instead of 45,000 employees, Chipotle has 70,000 employees as of 2017

Corporate management:

  • Chipotle's current board of directors consists of: Steve Ells, Albert Baldocchi, Paul Cappuccio, Neil Flanzraich, Robin Hickenlooper, Kimbal Musk, Ali Namvar, and Matthew Paul [3]

Operation and distribution:

  • 2nd sentence says "As of December 2012," which is dated.

Menu:

  • Where it says "Additional optional toppings are offered free of charge," queso is not free of charge.

I don't see a problem with the references. They are reliable sources, and since they are making minor changes to this page, it's not an issue. Question for editors: Splitting part of Food Safety section into new article?

Looking at the article, it seemed like the list of outbreaks in the Food Safety section is very long, and seems to put WP:UNDUE weight on that part of the company. By a very rough word count, the food safety section has ~2700 words, and the entire article is ~8300 words, which is almost 1/3 of the article itself. I thought about being WP:BOLD and creating a separate article that is a list of the food safety outbreaks, but I did not want to be accused of POV-forking. I envision the split article to mainly be the list of outbreaks, and beefing up the lead of the food safety section.

This guy is a paid editor for Chipotle, so don't believe a word they say. He doesn't want the lede to mention that the Chipotle article is almost two thirds about its appalling labor and hygiene record. Apparently that is not important despite the weighting in the article. So no conflict of interest here! Lucky you don;t edit the Hitler article, otherwise it would be focused on him being an artist, vegetarian and nature lover. LOL. Add a labor section?

Is there a reason there isn't a specific section for labor infringements? The 2021 strike action is pretty significant, especially in the face of the violations of the Fair Workweek Law. Undue weight on controversies

Recently an editor or editors at two different IP addresses and I have come into conflict over some material in the article. My overall opinion is that the article places undue weight on controversies involving the company. This was earlier observed by User:Angryapathy and at its good article reassessment. Let's take the material in question piece by piece:

  • 2009 food poisoning outbreak: Another local incident. About 60 people got sick from eating at a single Chipotle in Minnesota. Maybe another section can mention it, but it doesn't need its own section.

The article already has good coverage of several severe food poisoning outbreaks, as well as data breaches and lawsuits. It does not need to cover every single negative incident involving a Chipotle restaurant. The article in the state that I found it read like a hit piece. I disagree. Search for site:cnn.com chipotle on Google News and you'll see a dozen stories from just the past couple of months. If we added a section to the article every time any national news website mentioned Chipotle, in the 28 years the restaurant chain has existed, we would be left with a totally unreadable article. The story in question is a human-interest piece about the perils of social media mobs. It does not provide any useful information to the reader about the restaurant chain.
