Mechanism

First OH- adds rapidly to one molecule of the aldehyde resulting in the formation of a hydroxy alkoxide ion. This ion acts as a hydride-ion donor to the second molecule of aldehyde. This is the slow step. Finally, the acid and alkoxide ions formed exchange protons through the solvent.

In the presence of high concentration of base, the hydroxy alkoxide ion further reacts with the base to give a doubly charged anion. Now this acts as a hydride-ion donor to the second molecule of aldehyde. Subsequently, the alkoxide ion formed acquires a proton from the solvent.Roshan220195 (talk) 13:40, 21 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The mechanisms given on the page don't look quite complete to me. Shouldn't there be an arrow from the O- "kicking in" to push out the hydride? Also, shouldn't there be an extra arrow when the OH attacks the aldehyde?
