Prose

[edit]
  • Is the first comma necessary?
    • Removed.
  • "The Bree-land" – is the article required? It is not used elsewhere. Also:
    • Removed.
  • I would add some elaboration here that Bree is located in Bree-land to avoid any confusion.
    • Done.
  • "his early years at Oxford" – Oxford Oxford or Oxford University? Also wikilink.
    • Both at once. Linked the uni.
      • Good.
  • "starting-point" – is it correct to spell it with a hyphen?
    • Removed.
  • "Frodo accidentally put the One Ring on" – I know this is not a plot summary but the way this is phrased just sounds far too funny. Could it be elaborated upon at all, like "Frodo accidentally slipped the One Ring on his finger" etc.
    • Done.
  • "and a squint-eyed Southerner" – what does Southerner mean in this context?
    • A foreign fellow from someways far off south, so they says. Barliman, another pint of your best bitter, I'll thank you. (Glossed.)
  • The sentence starting "As Bree lies at the meeting" is lengthy. Maybe split "though as Arnor in the north" into a new sentence.
    • Done.
  • "Bree is the chief village of Bree-land, the only place" – recommend "Bree is the chief village of Bree-land, and the only place". Ignore me if this is standard in BE.
    • It is, and we prefer it; but no matter, done.
  • "could read the Prancing Pony inscription" – italicise Prancing Pony.
    • Done.
  • "exactly parallel with Chetwode (or 'wood-wood') in Berkshire close by" – does this part of the sentence have to be quoted to Shippey? It is factual geographically.
    • I think so, yes: firstly it's his statement, and secondly it's the parallel we're interested in here.
      • Ah, I see your point now.
  • "part of Tolkien's "linguistic heresy", his" – I would wikilink heresy for readers unfamiliar with the concept.
    • Done.

Refs

[edit]

Passes spotcheck on refs 2, 5, 6, 9, 15 and 21.

  • Noted.
  • Ref 12 has a bear URL.
    • Fixed.
  • Ref 18 is unreliable per WP:IMDb.
    • Replaced.
