User:DGG trimmed this article of entries that don't have a Wikipedia article, added the content to the lead, " It is limited to those companies notable enough to have a Wikipedia article. ", in this diff.

I agree with the trim, but in my view the scope is something that belongs here on the Talk page, so I moved it here. But actually on second thought, will let that stand. Self-reverting. Jytdog (talk) 22:17, 29 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Jytdog: Not having seen DGG's previous trim (which the article creator reverted), I re-trimmed the article just now. The article creator has created three WP:COATRACK list articles composed largely of items with no Wikipedia articles. I have trimmed the other two as well: Tech companies in the New York metropolitan area, and List of journalists in New York City. The article creator needs to follow WP:WTAF rather than creating coatrack articles. Softlavender (talk) 09:25, 30 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
With respect to the list of journalists, I advised the creator "Please remember that these lists are supposed to contain only those people notable enough for WP articles. I have not removed the others, because many of those listed there but without articles should probably notable enough for articles to be written. The most helpful thing you could do at this point is to write articles for them; pattern them after the similar ones that have already been written," I continue to think many--though not most-- of those removed would justify articles. But at his point, I agree with removing all without articles until the articles are written. (In general, my own opinion is that one can also include those unquestionably qualified for a WP article if the qualification is unambiguously supported by sourced data in the entry. This can be practical for lists of people (eg., those who are members of a legislature). It doesn't really apply to most of the removed journalists. It would be much more difficult with companies.
And for the biotech companies, I think very few of them would justify articles. The lists were added based apparently on this and similar pages. Using a list such as that is in my opinion a direct and flagrant violation of NOTDIRECTORY . FWIW, the justification given in the edit summary reverting my edit was

"rstr - WP:NOTABILITY not restricted to Wikipedia articles" . DGG ( talk ) 21:48, 1 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Notability of list items

[edit]

Hi, I was cleaning up several references with bare links and missing titles after coming across it in Category:All articles with bare URLs for citations, and I noticed that many of the items here are red links, and only have the company's own contact information on their website as a reference. I'm not sure if this meets the claim that these are notable companies, so I added maintenance tags to flag these for discussion/review. Beagall (talk) 13:51, 10 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
