Merge discussion

[edit]

Propose merger of Greater Belfast to this article as part of a larger review of this article, which would include:

  • I can't find any definition of Greater Belfast from any official source, rather it is used to refer to a notional area around the city. This unofficial definition of Greater Belfast could be incorporated into a section within this article.
  • There are only three other places that use 'Greater' at List of urban areas in the United Kingdom (London, Manchester and Glasgow) all of which are established on statutory grounding. No other cities (from my brief survey) appear to have a separate article for their 'Greater areas'
  • This article should be updated to define the Belfast Metropolitan area and its components, which would include most of what people refer to as 'Greater Belfast':
Belfast Metropolitan Area, is made up of Belfast, Carrickfergus, Castlereagh, Lisburn, Netwonabbey and North Down District Council. (Belfast Metropolitan Area Plan (PDF), p.12 and map (p.7))
  • Belfast Metropolitan Urban and Rural Areas, are the two main divisions of the wider Metropolitan Area.
The Belfast Metropolitan Urban Area therefore includes the 'urban areas' of the Belfast Metropolitan Area: Bangor; Belfast Urban Area; Carrickfergus; Carryduff; Castlereagh Urban Area; Crawfordsburn; Greenisland Urban Area; Groomsport; Groomsport and Crawfordsburn; Helen's Bay; Holywood Urban Area; Lisburn Urban Area; Milltown (Lisburn LGD); Newtownabbey Urban Area; and Seahill. (NINIS stats)

In summary then merge Greater Belfast here; detail above areas within the article making use of data and maps; change the references at the UK article to bring into line with the definition of the Belfast Metropolitan Area and the Belfast Urban Area, as used by NISRA and the Planning Service. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rathgarrr (talkcontribs) 20:51, 5 July 2011 (UTC) [reply]

I agree with a merger.
I think Greater (Town X) is just a commonly used term to refer to the urban area/metropolitan area for a British/Irish town also there is a Greater Bristol article and the Southampton Urban Area article refers to itself in a map as Greater Southampton.
Why do you want a review of Belfast in the List of metropolitan areas in the United Kingdom article. That article is all from a single source? Eopsid (talk) 14:17, 8 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I dont think the Belfast metropolitan Urban Area is just the urban areas within the Belfast Metropolitan area as it does not include Newtownards according to this map[1]. I would imagine that this would be in the metropolitan area only due to it's proximity. It also considered as such by world-gazetteer[2] Eopsid (talk) 17:30, 8 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The Greater Belfast article just duplicates what is written on here so I will now go ahead with a merger. Eopsid (talk) 13:56, 4 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Odd title

[edit]

Shouldn't it be either Belfast metropolitan area or Belfast Metropolitan Urban Area? That is, we're not in the business of making up proper names. Dicklyon (talk) 18:52, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
