Nawzad vs Now Zad?

[edit]

I see that Now Zad has been replaced with Nawzad. I've been spelling it Now Zad as that is what current news agencies are reporting/spelling it as, rather than the previous spelling Nawzad. This may have been the British spelling? Not sure. My opinion is to go with the current spelling. --Ouketi.ego (talk) 01:36, 06 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

When I served in Now Zad in 2006 that was how we spelt it. I would also like to point out that there were on 53 british soldiers stationed there hence why we could never defeat the Taliban. So if a company of 300 US marines is called small what the hell were we? Tangotwozero (talk) 10:32, 22 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The spelling of places should be the official woding used by a countries government, used by those living in the location. Unfortunately Media producers and Journalists, sending back reports via video link or text, will usually corrupt place names to how they sound at the time to them. That then gets onto the international media and assumed to be correct by the general public. However, although I have seen 'Nawzad', used in some archived publications, the wording 'Naw Zad' is used on this map [1] produced by the Afghanistan Managment Information Service. It is also the wording used in this 'Asia-Pacific Daily Report' April 9, 2004 (pdf file), also this Asian Media group News website Dawn News, by Google Maps and the Wiki articles Nawzad and Nawzad District. Whilst 'Now Zad' is used on an US Air Force, Defense Mapping Agency Aerospace Center, air navigation map from the 80s:- [2] and Windows Live (Bing Maps). British Medics

[edit]

Battle of Nawzad#Escalation of fighting lists the various british troops onsite, including some from "British Medics." A quick bit of googling didn't help me clarify this to any specific unit, so if anyone has any ideas please fill it in with the appropriate term/link. Thanks!
