Oppose - I think, as per WP:ENGLISH, Basilica of the Holy Child is more appropriate; English news sources seem to refer to it as such NY Daily News, AP/Yahoo News, PBS -- MacAddct1984 ^{(talk • contribs)} 18:17, 12 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
- Comment I'm not sure the name Santo Niño de Cebú is English and that is the patron of Cebu after whom this church-basilica was named. The Guardian, New York Times, BBC News and practically all local Philippine English media, not to mention, travel guides, refer to this national landmark and famous tourist spot in Cebu as Basilica of Santo Niño, Santo Niño Church or Santo Niño Cathedral. We don't translate names, in this case, patron saint names to English; the reason we have Manila's "Saint Augustine Church" at San Agustin Church, Manila and the "Basilica of Saint Sebastian" at Basilica of San Sebastian, Manila. --RioHondo (talk) 00:26, 13 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Support restore to Basilica del Santo Niño - could consider or Basilica of the Santo Niño - but since the main article is at Santo Niño de Cebú, and since Basilica del Santo Niño is common in English sources no urgent need. If so then "del" is "of the", not "of". User:RioHondo can you accept either "del" or "of the"? In ictu oculi (talk) 03:59, 13 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
- Re I would prefer "Basilica of the Santo Niño" over "Basilica del Santo Niño" just to be consistent with other wp articles on Philippine churches. Basilica del Santo Niño, although equally common, is just too spanish for English WP i think. --RioHondo (talk) 08:29, 13 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Strong oppose the mixed title; it looks horrifying. I would support either an all-Spanish (del) or all-English (Holy Child) title, but not both. Red Slash 05:53, 15 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
- Re Mixed titles are normal for churches. There's the Dulce Nombre de Maria Cathedral Basilica (Sweet Name of Mary Cathedral Basilica) in the U.S. Territory of Guam and the Basilica of Nuestra Señora de Atocha (Basilica of Our Lady of Atocha) in Spain. From spanglish to franglais, there's the Basilica of Notre-Dame du Port (Basilica of Our Lady of the Port) in France and the Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel (Our Lady of Good Help Chapel) in Canada. Some angloitalian too, like the Basilica of Saint Ambrose (Basilica of Sant'Ambrogio) in Italy? This Cebu basilica was dedicated to and named after Santo Niño de Cebú, and wp:commonname is Santo Niño. --RioHondo (talk) 02:06, 16 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  - Yes, too many church names are in mixed languages. It looks horrible and needs sorting out. Personally I prefer them to be kept fully in the original language unless there's strong evidence that the common name in English-language sources is all English or a mixture (the latter being pretty rare in my experience). -- Necrothesp (talk) 14:02, 17 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    - In that case, I would agree to renaming the article to its full Spanish title of Basilica del Santo Niño as Santo Niño is the most common reference to it. Practically no one here calls Santo Niño de Cebú the "Holy Child of Cebu", its just unnatural and unrecognizable.--RioHondo (talk) 14:50, 17 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
