Recent health

[edit]

I saw Andy in pro-health care law commercials in NC today and recently. It sounds like he's had a stroke, but I haven't heard anything about it, and it's not listed here. Anyone know what's up? Kochamanita (talk) 23:22, 26 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Goober

[edit]

Goober in The Andy Griffith Show was mostly called Goober Beasely. I believe the Pyle surname was only for a couple episodes.

Absolutely WRONG. Goober was Goober Pyle Gomer's cousin.

Well, no, not ABSOLUTELY wrong. Goober was, for most of the series, called Goober Pyle and was Gomer's cousin. But in at least one episode, Andy introduced Goober to another character as Goober Beasley, as documented on page 132 of "The Andy Griffith Show Book" by Ken Beck and Jim Clark. I remember the episode myself, because I was struck by Andy saying that last name. I'll see if I can dig up the specific episode in which it happened. But it DID happen. Matlock

[edit]

Should Matlock not be mentioned?

I think Matlock should be listed. It's something he was involved in. --Jennie Ambrose 09:36, 4 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The article mentioned The Simpson's and Matlock being the favorite show of Grandpa Simpson as well as Patty and Selma's. This is not true Patty and Selma's favorite show is MacGyver, not Matlock. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.163.9.5 (talk) 14:41, 3 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

"Monologist"?

[edit]

Is Monologist a word? Answer: No it is not. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 62.140.196.148 (talkcontribs). 06:51, 12 July 2006

Monologist dates from 1625, according to the OED, and has been used in its present sense, "one who presents monologues", since 1711. I challenge anyone to find a serious dictionary that does not have this word in it. The person who wrote this pulled it from the place the sun don't shine, which is why it is hard to find definitions there. Ortolan88 15:44, 7 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Merriam-Webster online doesn't appear to have it. Don't know if you consider them serious.

Section on Ron Howard

[edit]

The section under the Andy Griffith show on this page is ridiculous...I can't understand what Ron Howard is supposed to be saying enough to edit it. For example:

""I was always grateful for the experience and the atmosphere that was created, because it was the best of all possible for coming environments, particularly for a kid growing up.""

There's just no way that's a direct quote from an American actor with half a brain. Consider also:

""It would give a chance to absolutely go highly on top, and do something different and I respect that. Although, very embarrassing to be 14-years-old and crying to effect, it hit me hard, when it finally ended." The last thing that Howard said about one of Griffith's first unpopular TV series in the 1970s, which included The Headmaster, he said, "I think they were 249 Andy Griffith episodes, well, that's a lot of seeing Andy as 1 character." Andrew Jr.’s death in 1996, drew Griffith & Howard real closer, as Howard received word as he broke down weeping. He was also one of the people to be concerned about his heart condition and surgery in 2000, and today, he still keeps Griffith in touch.""

Absolutely go highly on top? It really sounds like someone wrote this whose first language was not English, or that they copied and pasted from translation software or something. Just wanted to signal this as a poorly-written article; didn't know how to verify Ron's supposed statements enough to edit them.

I agree completely with the above. The Ron Howard section was unreadable. I have deleted it.24.6.7.233 22:07, 4 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

some of this section seems a little fluffy and trite, such as "To this day, Andy still calls Ron by his childhood nickname, "Ronny." Howard doesn't seem to mind one bit." Jkellymc (talk) 19:42, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"Title characters"

[edit]

Correct me if I'm wrong, but there is no "title character" in The Andy Griffith Show as mentioned in the second sentence because there is no character in that show by that name. Universe Man (talk) 05:00, 9 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Language and style

[edit]

Ehm, I shudder to mention this but IMHO, the language, grammar, and style of several portions of this article, especially the section on Matlock, could do with some serious improvements. Phrases such as "Despite of him getting along with Griffith" are very bad English. Lufiend 17:27, 25 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Per debate and discussion re: assessment of the approximate 100 top priority articles of the project, this article has been included as a top priority article. Wildhartlivie (talk) 12:09, 29 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Birthdate

[edit]

I don't think the citation needed tag is necessary just because another editor and ibdb.com has it as different dates. A quick google search shows it is 1926 in many reliable sources.[1], [2], [3], [4]. Normally, birthdates are not cited because they are not challenged, and I don't think it is being questioned here either. Thank you. --Omarcheeseboro (talk) 16:46, 25 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Widowhood

[edit]
  1. Family Affair is cited as a show about a widowhood. This is not correct. Bill Davis was a bachelor who adopted his deceased brother’s children. Both his brother and sister-in-law were killed in an automobile accident. Bill himself had never been married. Family Affair should be removed from the list, or the list description should be expanded from that of “widowhood” alone. --Rainy Day (talk) 21:03, 14 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  2. Was Beulah a widow? I’m not familiar with the Beulah show, and could find no references to widowhood. It wasn’t, however, a 60’s show (it was an early 50’s show), so doesn’t belong in the list as it’s currently framed. --Rainy Day (talk) 21:03, 14 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  3. Petticoat Junction was missing from the list, so i added it. --Rainy Day (talk) 21:03, 14 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Military

[edit]

Griffith was born in 1926, making him a member of the World War II generation. He would have been eligible for the draft in 1944. Was he classified as 4-F, or otherwise exempt? For an article about someone born in that era, it's a major omission. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.155.82.245 (talk) 16:24, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It's a biographical aspect that's missing.. calling it a "major omission" seems a bit off the mark. Something about this is probably in his autobiography --CutOffTies (talk) 17:54, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Street renaming spoof

[edit]

I remember watching a television spoof, similar to what Candid Camera did, where a street was being renamed after Griffith, and he showed up for the honors, only to be picketed by a (fabricated) crowd of angry individuals who didn't want the name changed, but I can't find any mention of it through Google. Does anyone remember what show/episode that was, and would you be willing to add it? Or am I totally off my rocker and that particular episode featured someone else? It's been several years… Thatfield977 (talk) 13:50, 18 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You may want to try to the reference desk for this, since it really doesn't have anything to do with improving this article. --CutOffTies (talk) 13:56, 18 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
If this memory is true, it would be an ommission from the article, and thus it would indirectly help improve the article if we solved the question. -- Zanimum (talk) 17:55, 3 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Article needs more images

[edit]

Nuff' said. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.248.211.16 (talk) 20:14, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There are several episodes of the Andy Griffith show that the copyright was allowed to expire on and are now in the public domain. Screen shots could be taken from them, or even an entire episode could be uploaded and placed into the article. Rreagan007 (talk) 16:07, 3 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Please reference his "Potato" nickname (if true). Also, the current image for the subject features a bunch of potatos, and not a single image of Andy Griffith himself. This needs to be changed/corrected.--69.146.144.86 (talk) 16:30, 3 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Death

[edit]

I just heard about Andy Griffith's death. He will be missed. Jdaniels15 (talk) 14:53, 3 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Is it offically confirmed that he died? I have heard the same thing. However, I have also been hearing reports that he was just taken to the hospital by ambulance at 7am Eastern time this morning.--ChaseW29 (talk) 16:08, 3 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Confirmed within the past few minutes by the Dare County, NC, Sheriff's Office. JTRH (talk) 16:36, 3 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Presidential Medal of Freedom

[edit]

The current picture shows Andy Griffith being awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Would it not be a good idea to include a couple of sentences as to what he did to be awarded it? 69.143.110.86 (talk) 15:32, 3 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It seems the picture has been moved down in the article since your post, closer to the Honors section. In short, for "an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors". -- Zanimum (talk) 18:01, 3 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Dual Tony nominee

[edit]

Anyone know about this? Therequiembellishere (talk) 18:46, 3 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

My goodness, our stage coverage is horrible on Wikipedia, it seems. I've added the two nomination to the article now. Thank you for bringing this to our attention. -- Zanimum (talk) 18:57, 3 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Death section

[edit]

shouldn't there be a section in the article about his death? Thebestofall007 (talk) 23:19, 3 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It's discussed under "Personal life". There's not that much info on his death, to justify a separate section. -- Zanimum (talk) 00:09, 4 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Original photo

[edit]

I think a more recent photo would be an order, instead of the one that was recently placed in the infobox. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.58.48.90 (talk) 23:29, 3 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Newly added photo made me shutter when I saw it. Was there really a problem with the other one?JOJ Hutton 01:30, 4 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I prefer the current one from when he was younger. Now that he is deceased, this is how most people will always remember him, when he was in his prime. Plus the old one wasn't really a very good photo. It was rather awkward looking with someone's hands near his neck. Rreagan007 (talk) 02:05, 4 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The current image is when he was very young. He is best rememberd during his Mayberry days and his Matlock days.JOJ Hutton 02:41, 4 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
True, but the current image is only 5 years younger than his Mayberry days, and it looks a lot more like his Mayberry days than the one when he is really old. Ideally we would be using a good quality picture from the time period when he was doing the Andy Griffith Show. As mentioned above, perhaps a screen shot from one of the public domain episodes would work well for the infobox picture. Rreagan007 (talk) 03:44, 4 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Have to disagree. It looks nothing like his Mayberry days. He looks thin and gaunt in that photo, while he had put on a bit more weight and had filled out his frame by then. I literally shuttered when I saw this image. Looks horrible and nearly unrecognizable.--JOJ Hutton 04:21, 4 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I would prefer the picture of him with the Medal of Freedom as the lead photo, rather than the gaunt picture that is in the lead now. The Medal of Freedom picture was in lead position prior to the mass of "death day" edits. Safiel (talk) 05:59, 4 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Alternatives (which would require cropping):
I would say that any of these cropped images would be better than the one in the infobox (which looks like a mug shot), or the one with the medal. --kelapstick(bainuu) 06:07, 4 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Of those 4 alternatives, I definitely prefer the one of him and Ron Howard. It's a pretty good photo that shows him in his sheriff's uniform and definitely reflects how people best remember him. The first one is an awkward pose with hanging laundry and with a cigarette in his hand (smoking has fallen out of favor). The second one is not bad, but most people will not recognize Julie Adams like they will recognize a young Ron Howard. The forth one is a strange angle with Rob Reiner in profile in the foreground. But I would prefer any of those 4 over the medal of freedom one. To me, pictures of Griffith at that age don't even look like him, because the image of him from the Andy Griffith show are so cemented into my mind.Rreagan007 (talk) 14:28, 4 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I had considered the one with the cigarette being problematic (despite how cool smoking on TV is, we must think of the children!) All kidding aside, I think that any of them should be cropped if they were to be included in the infobox anyway. --kelapstick(bainuu) 22:44, 4 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Edit request to "Death" section

[edit]

The last two sentences of the section (about the death certificate), which were just added, are poorly written and too wordy. The two mentions of the death certificate are totally unnecessary. All that needs to be done is to simply merge the cause of death (heart attack) and burial site (Griffith Family Cemetery) into the original text, along with the new citation to the AP/Yahoo article. Just delete the last two sentences completely. My suggested edit is below.

Current: On July 3, 2012, Griffith died at his home on Roanoke Island in Dare County, North Carolina, following an undisclosed illness.[46] He was 86. He was buried on the island within five hours of his death.[47][48][49] The Death Certificate filed indicated he had passed away from the effects of a heart attack in a 24 hour period before his death. The Death Certificate also stated that he would be laid to rest at the Griffith Family Cemetery in Manteo.[50]

Change to: On July 3, 2012, Griffith died from a heart attack at his home on Roanoke Island in Dare County, North Carolina. He was 86. He was buried in the Griffith Family Cemetery on the island within five hours of his death.[46][47][48][49][50]

Mayberry's connections to Mt. Airy N.C.

[edit]

Hello you guys. I don't post to Wikipedia much, so forgive me if my format is off. I just wanted to bring up the Mayberry/Mt. Airy connection. The show is loosely inspired by the actual town. Evidence being referencing the nearby town of "Mount Pilot" which is directly from the actual town close to Mount Airy called Pilot Mountain. Andy said so himself in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=leL-Cf8v_ms @22:16 also @22:53 references Bannertown being in an episode which is a town located in the city of Mt. Airy. @23:45 He acknowledges the connection to Mt. Airy

New Lead Image

[edit]

Usually after an individual passes away, their lead image is replaced with a younger or an image that depicts the individual in the prime of their career. I feel like there is potential for Griffith:

I replaced the current lead image with Option F as a test run and wait until a final decision has been made.--TDKR Chicago 101 (talk) 05:44, 18 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Option "F" is the best quality image; he's best known for two shows: The Andy Griffith Show and Matlock, so one of those "eras" should probably be used. Image A from the Matlock era is not of as high a quality as the option F (the AGS era), and many of the others are from eras when his characters would not have been as recognizable. Good choice. --Jayron32 12:49, 18 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Agree that Option "F" is best. In early 2020, somebody replaced that image with Option A, so I am going to go back to Option F, which was stable for several years after this discussion. HouseOfChange (talk) 03:27, 12 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Someone has replaced the lead image with an image from 2005. I will replace it again with F, as per earlier consensus. HouseOfChange (talk) 13:32, 1 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Associations

[edit]

Since I've templated the Associations section with a number of tags, I figured I should open a corresponding section here. A large amount of text has been added, mostly by Pizzamaniac16, some of which I have previously removed or reverted. The vast majority of it lacks sources and much of the material seems trivial and only tangentially relevant to Griffith, and I'd argue is written in a highly unencyclopedic tone; more importantly, the vast majority of it is unsourced. The Don Knotts section seems pretty solid, but most of the other material probably needs to go. Grandpallama (talk) 18:19, 26 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The abovementioned user has now been confirmed as a sockpuppet, and it has been two weeks since I threw the tags up, so I'm going to clear out the parts that are unsupported. If folks want to find sources and reinsert them, that is fine, of course. Grandpallama (talk) 15:03, 10 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Early life edits reverted

[edit]

Greetings to whoever reads this stuff. I added some substantial information to his early life. They deleted it and said that I was disruptive. Disruptive!! and said I had no sources! Do you folks think I just make this stuff up ? This was a pivotal part of his life. This information came from a friend named Gary Phaup who is one of the editors of Nostalgic Digest and this information was published in his magazine.
