Move request

[edit]

See Talk:Al Jazeera Arabic#Requested move 29 October 2023 for move request. P.I. Ellsworth , ed. put'er there 02:51, 6 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Now moved to Talk:Al_Jazeera_Arabic/Archive_5#Requested_move_29_October_2023. Hemiauchenia (talk) 22:52, 12 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
What is this about? M.Bitton (talk) 22:57, 12 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
"Al Jazeera" was originally the title of the article that is now called Al Jazeera Arabic. There was a move request (linked above, that I initiated). The consensus of that request was to make "Al Jazeera" a disambiguation page for the interim. About half of all outgoing views from this disambig are to Al Jazeera Media Network (see wikinav), so that might be the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. I'd like to a broader discussion as to the fate of this disambig page. Hemiauchenia (talk) 23:01, 12 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I do remember the move request and the consensus that ensued, that's why I couldn't figure out which consensus Paine Ellsworth was referring to. M.Bitton (talk) 23:08, 12 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

What should the fate of this page be?

Poll responses

[edit]
  • Oppose 2, happy with either 1 or 3 As the wikinav demonstrates, 90% of the outgoing clicks are related to Al Jazeera Media Network, with around 50% going to that article alone. There's a good case for redirecting it to that article, though I have no issue with it remaining a separate disambig. I would oppose making it a redirect to Jazira, because that is too broad considering the clickthrough rates for this disambig. Hemiauchenia (talk) 23:35, 12 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Prefer 3 I think most people searching this term are looking for the org and/or its subsids, they will get it with 3. Selfstudier (talk) 14:49, 15 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • As discussed below, if we consider this 5% clickthrough rate as a failure of navigation, then option #1 is the best available recourse. --Joy (talk) 09:26, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Option 1 Wikinav data shows almost all outgoing traffic goes to the media network or its subsidiaries. JM (talk) 03:15, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Option 1 I hear "Al Jazeera" and I think of the news entity. JM also cites a convincing reason. Darkfrog24 (talk) 13:36, 3 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion

[edit]

For context, please see Talk:Al_Jazeera_Arabic/Archive_5#Requested_move_29_October_2023, where it was decided that this disambiguation page should be temporarily created pending the release of wikinav results. Hemiauchenia (talk) 23:35, 12 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • This was done in October/November, and the graph at https://pageviews.wmcloud.org/?project=wiki.riteme.site&platform=all-access&agent=user&redirects=0&start=2015-07&end=2024-01&pages=Al_Jazeera indicates we were at some sort of a huge spike in traffic, which is still dissipating. It's really hard to make meaningful changes based on traffic patterns until this spike actually settles down. Fundamentally, it's another question like we've had recently - do we handle ambiguity with a short list (like right now) or a longer list (and Al Jazeera Media Network is effectively the latter). Since even the baseline traffic seems to be on the order of multiple tens of thousands of views a month, I'd lean towards a longer form. --Joy (talk) 08:23, 13 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I suspect that most of the views to this page (other-other and other-empty, which collectively make up 90% of the page views, which is highly unusual traffic compared to other articles) are probably driven by the "Al Jazeera is funded by the Qatar government" link found on Al Jazeera's YouTube videos, which if many are accidental clicks, explains why the number of clickthroughs relative to views (only around 5% of viewers click on any linked article) are so low. You are correct that the views are still elevated above background levels, but is there any reason to think that the absolute ratios would be differ when the attention subsides? Hemiauchenia (talk) 17:33, 13 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, but why would those be other-other but not other-external? Anyway, if the main contention is that with #3 we're now failing to navigate all of those readers to actual knowledge, then only #1 seems like the way to go, because #2 is more like WP:DICDEF which probably wouldn't be helpful. --Joy (talk) 14:22, 15 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

BTW, Wikipedia:WikiProject Disambiguation/Popular pages for January shows this was #3 disambiguation list by traffic overall. --Joy (talk) 15:50, 5 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
