Origin

[edit]

The para starting with "It was presumably..." contains only speculation and theorizing, all of which is wrong - see Wine Grapes (see Robinson, Harding, and Vouillamoz) for example. While it is true that the speculation and theories exist, I am not sure it is the job of Wikipedia to repeat them. I would delete that para, and possibly replace it with something authoritative. It seems to me that spaniards gave a wrong picture of Alvarinho. Since Alvarinho's origin is Monção region (Minho valley, Portugal), where its microclimatic conditions allow the production of several top quality brands, e.g. Brejoeira, Deu-la-deu, Quinta da Pedra, Quinta de Alderiz, etc, etc, it is hilarious the intentional emphasys that article's authors gave to Alvarinho's production in galicia (and its "high quality"), using a article published in a tabloid magazine as a bibliographic reference. Is it feasable? The reporter was relative of some Xunta de Galicia's member? Is it a promotional campaign?

To compare a centenial cultivation (Alvarinho), whose wines are well established among worldwide markets, with a derivative one (Albariño) that is produced out of the origin, consequently with different growing conditions (soil properties, absence of microclimatic conditions), it is a kind of sacrilege. Authors should correct the article, reporting albariño as a derivative of Alvarinho, because was established in rías baixas 20 years ago. Authors also must consider that many "compatriotas" prefer to purchase grapes produced in the villages surrounding Monção, in order to produce real Alvarinho in their galician wineries. And if you want to compare quality, please use technical references (e.g. regarding comparison of acids' levels) instead of a tabloid article.

Best regards,
